Very cool, and with a new cover!

It's certainly more tasteful than the baffling Ovation monstrosity  ;D

Vulgarity doesn't refer to Solti's conducting, or the Chicago's playing, but rather to Berlioz's music, specifically the last two movements.
At least that was the reviewer's intent -- I guess you'll soon discover whether it coincidentally refers to Solti's conducting? But his penchant for "heightened drama" might just be fitting for such music.

Speaking of vulgarity, I finally went ahead with the long-dithered-over purchase of Tennstedt's Mahler:

and will probably follow that up shortly with Rattie's. God forgive me but Solti's might be next!

Thank you Neal! And yes, this box will keep me busy, along with all the Sterling CD'S. Hopefully at the end of October I will be able to listen again.

Happy belated birthday, mijn vriend!

Cutting down be damned. And I'm part of the union again, that's what counts:

Just ordered. Pretty cheap (as such things go) on jpc.de.

Nelson Freire - Chopin & Schumann recordings below - stimulated by some discussion of the nocturnes in the Chopin thread w/ that title and the excellent reviews on Amazon - don't believe that I have any performances by this pianist!  :)

I've only one, but it's a treasure: Brahms's concertos with Chailly/Gewandhaus Leipzig. I'm curious how you get on with the Schumann.

I'm not SonicMan but I have had Freire's Schumann disc for a few years now.  The interpretations are exceptional across the board with the concluding theme form Arabesque absolutely magical.  My only problem is what I consider overly rich sound that dampens some of the clarity and detail.  I tend to be in the minority concerning rich/dry sound, so you likely would not find any problem.

Presto's sale convinced me to stop dithering over:

The Rattie is largely a "blind' (deaf?) purchase, since I've heard few of the selections included. But worth $20, I suspect! ;)
Same with the Jacobs Prague and Jupiter. The others I've been able to hear via the web.

What a great service it is to hear recordings without having to buy them first. All too often such hearing compels me to buy, however, so I suppose I should be grateful to the record companies that resist making full tracks available and expect us to buy based on 30-second clips!

Thanks, Don. You know how much I appreciate your appraisals, especially of piano recordings. I'll see if I can find this one to hear via the web, first. ;)

I like Rattle's Mahler a lot and please let me know what you think of that Herreweghe recording. I've been considering it myself.

It's on Mog (think I had to search under the title). Mahler's one of the few composers I can't seem to get enough of and want many different recordings so I don't tire of favorite pieces.

I liked what I heard well enough to want to hear it again under better sound conditions and to add the disc to my collection.  Herreweghe's conducting is on the softer side, as expected, more respectful and polished than forceful and daring.

Connelly is pretty good--her Urlicht surprised me. But the biggest surprise was Henschel. Try his Revelge.  Makes me want to hear him in DLVDE.

You and my Dad would have a great time talking to each other. Mahler is his absolute favorite composer and owns every Mahler box set released plus hundreds of single releases. He also also owns many documentaries on DVD and biographies, but his current favorite book is this one:

Anyway, just thought I would throw that out there. :D Of the Rattle Mahler series, I liked the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and the 7th best of them all.

Great, Dave! I hope you will enjoy this cycle as much as I am at the moment! Glad to see you got the Rattle too, I very much like many of the recordings in that cycle. The Rattle was my first complete Mahler cycle. :)

YES! Get Solti too! ;) Love that cycle, so fiery and passionate! Have you heard his 6th? The favourite of Sarge and myself! :)

Ha! Give me time to make peace with the drama queen and the prissy fop before taking on the ax murderer!
And yes, I have heard his sixth. Even more relentlessly driven than Karajan's, as I recall.

I agree with Daniel, Solti's cycle is very beautiful and powerfully thrilling; definitely worth getting!

Hi David - just put the order in today, so should arrive by mid-week; appreciate Don's comments and suspect that I will enjoy - only 5* comments from the Amazonians, including Santa Fe Listener who typically provides excellent reviews IMO (although I'm not always in agreement); also 10/10 rating from Jed Distler reprinted HERE - Dave :)

My second favorite recording of the Nocturnes.   And since my favorite is Rubinstein,  "second favorite" is an extremely high compliment.
