Sid

Hello everyone, my name is Sid, I'm from Australia.

I have enjoyed classical music for the past 20 years & started collecting CD's last year.

I'm very eclectic in my tastes, everything is up for grabs. I especially enjoy music that is original, no matter what the century or style. Some favourites that I can mention are Haydn, Gounod, Bizet, Prokofiev, and Varese. I'm also trying to get into non-European classical music, and some composers I have enjoyed in that regard are Carter, Piazzolla, Villa-Lobos, Ramirez, Ifukube, Takemitsu & Peter Sculthorpe (a fellow Australian). I think the thing that makes me enjoy all of these, is that listening to them helps me develop my perceptive listening skills.

I look forward to participating in this forum, and will be posting my observations on my current listening on that thread regularly.

Cheers!

Hi Sid!  Welcome!  Are there any Australian composers you can introduce to us?

Hi Sid, and welcome.  Nice list of composers--and a lot of variety there.  I am a Sculthorpe fan, ever since hearing the Australian Chamber Ensemble do Port Essington.  (Can't recall the other things on the disc.)

Anyway, enjoy yourself here.

Some composers other than Peter Sculthorpe that I enjoy are Margaret Sutherland, Richard Hughes (they could be described as mid C20th Modernists) and contemporary composers such as Elena Kats-Chernin, Ross Edwards, Brett Dean, Barry Conyngham & Carl Vine.

Thanks!  My husband and I heard a piece by Carl Vine at a recital last year, and we liked it enough to get a couple of CDs of his chamber music, which we have enjoyed exploring.  The other names are new to me, and I'm looking forward to learning more about them.

You're welcome, Secondwind. I should have added, for historical accuracy, early C20th composer Percy Grainger. He put Australia on the map, musically speaking, but I don't think his output is distinctively Australian, it's more British.

I am also interested in connecting with other members who know about early & Renaissance music. This is one of the areas of classical that I have yet to explore. I'm planning on buying some Byrd, Tallis, Palestrina, de Victoria in the coming months...

Hello Sid - welcome to the GMG Forum -  :D

Your interests are certainly eclectic like many of the rest of us here, so not unusual -  ;)  Check out the Composer's Index - there are likely threads on composers that interest you already; looking forward to your posting & comments -  :)

Sid

Thanks very much, SonicMan, for that composers index link. It is very helpful, as I'm still beginning to navigate around this site & am not too familiar with it...

Welcome to GMG Sid!  Great to see so many countries represented here.  :)

Welcome Sid! Sculthorpe and Edwards are both composers whose work I have enjoyed - also Malcolm Williamson.
