Hi Greg - yep, that story is 'ole news' to me!  Actually, after Susan (i.e. Harpo) graduated from Brown University in Providence, she enter the University of Chicago to start a Masters degree in Social Work, and roomed at a place called the 'International House' - that's the place where she met these 'characters' - likely just 'horny' guys after American gals, who knows?

Now, this was the late '60s and the riots in the mid-West were rampant; she faced potentially physical harm in Chicago in her role as a 'social work' student and was scared; she transferred to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where I was starting my second year in medical school; for whatever reason we ended up rooming in adjacent houses on the campus and chose to 'board' (i.e. eat)  at an Ann Arbor coop called Vail House - that's where we met - this was in 1968 - she obtained her Masters degree in Social Work, and I was still in medical school; we married in '70 between my 3rd-4th years - was a 'fun' time for us; BOY - 40 yrs ago!

Why Ann Arbor as a choice - well, her father (a Jewish guy from Newark, NJ) chose in the 1930s to attend the University of Michigan because the 'price' was right, i.e. pretty cheap - he loved the experience; as a result, Susan's younger sister was @ Michigan when she transferred from Chicago.  Her father returned to the East Coast and attended NYU medical school where he met a younger female medical student, who became his wife - that union produced Susan.

Her grandmother, Rita Finkler was also an M.D. with just a fascinating life - check HERE, if interested.  Unfortunately, she died the year before I went to New Jersey to 'meet' the family (as they say) - believe as a medical student I would have loved knowing this pioneer, esp. since I ended up in academic radiology, teaching residents, giving lectures, and publishing - I hope she would have liked me.

Sorry for this 'long winded' response, but I've been proud to be married to this woman and to be a part of this remarkable family - Dave  :)

Well gosh, I don't know what to say (or write)!

Sonic forgot to say that he first noticed me when the kids in the co-op were playing volleyball and he thought "This is the worst volleyball player I've ever seen!"

Nice story, Dave. Sounds like good times, indeed.

I became slightly interested in an older Israeli musicology student who played the French horn. One night I dreamed that he was playing the trombone instead. I made the mistake of telling him about my dream. Needless to say he thought it had phallic symbolism and started chasing me around the dorm shouting "Suzanne, you will love it!"

I googled the lecherous Israeli and here's what he looks like now:

Maybe, but he also looks old enough to be my Uncle Max.  :)

He is a music professor, so I hope he's not a member of this forum!  ???

Every once in a while I wake up to music playing in my head--sometimes a song, sometimes a whole orchestral piece. It sounds great as I'm waking up, and I always wonder if I compose pieces in my sleep. In waking life I am not a composer at all, though I've certainly heard a lot of music and apparently have a good "aural memory."

Has anyone else had this experience?

It came up in Musicophilia by Sacks.  I had experience like that just a few days ago.  I was hearing a HIP ensemble play a late Beethoven SQ on period instruments, but I have no such recording in my collection! :o

Yeah, though an original work that I think is by a composer, but really something I just made up.  :o

Dreamed that I took a trip to my old neighborhood that I haven't lived in in nearly 10 years- was riding my bike there, and met a friend that was actually still living there. I think by about 2 or 3 years after I moved out, every single one of my friends moved out, too, but he might've been the last one, and to this day I still don't know if he lives there, though I seriously doubt he would. I talked to him for awhile about that, but that was all.
Seems to be the most common theme in my dream- old friends. I'd be surprised if anyone of them ever dreams of me, though.  :P

Happens fairly often with me too, especially ones with whom I've had a falling out.

Lately I keep having dreams that my kittens have come back. When they disappeared, I merely said "such is life" and moved on, but perhaps my subconscious places some other kind of value on them. Could the common thread between these two different recurring dreams be regret?

Yeah, could be regret.

I had a couple of dreams about my old dog a couple of months after she died, where she was on the school bus with me, and then jumped out of the window and ran away.  ::)

I wonder sometimes if it would be easiest, and most accurate to interpret dreams by just saying that at the base everything starts from desire. Even if you close your eyes and recycle thoughts, even if they are unpleasant, maybe there is a subconscious desire to go over those thoughts because they have some importance. Dreams, also.

Example from a while ago:
I dream about being kidnapped at the parking lot at work because when I was done working that night, there was a suspicious car sitting outside, and I had even pointed at it. After driving past it, I didn't think about it for the next few hours until I fell asleep.

Interpretation:
My subconscious felt unsafe, so it expressed the desire to make sure I'm not being threatened. It's not that I desired to be kidnapped, but I had to have my defenses up, even though I was asleep.

How much are actions guided by desire for survival, I wonder? How much in dreams?

My dreams getting kinda ridiculous lately...  ::)

Either the night before last night or the night before, I dreamed about a specific old friend. I've had variations of this dream many times already.

Last night, I dreamed the whole "old friends" thing in an epic dream (anyone who doesn't know- that's a type of dream that's very long and vivid). It started out with one friend in the last neighborhood I was living in. I wasn't even close to him, so dreaming about him was a surprise- he did move away unexpectedly, but that was many years ago (like 9).

So then I traveled to the neighborhood were I lived before that (only a few miles away from that). I had a repeat of this theme:
Quotewas riding my bike there, and met a friend that was actually still living there. I think by about 2 or 3 years after I moved out, every single one of my friends moved out, too, but he might've been the last one, and to this day I still don't know if he lives there, though I seriously doubt he would. I talked to him for awhile about that, but that was all.

Except this time, his mom invited me in and the house layout was strange, and I found him with a few others in his room. They were some part of strange group- couldn't figure it out, though they said they were a dance group. After that, the final scene (i'm sure i'm missing something in the dream) consisted of the "dance group" performing in front of an audience in the auditorium. Even though I was in the audience, I was also in the dance group onstage.  ??? The dance group also consisted of extra people, including 2 of the girls that I work with (which happen to be the only 2 people out of everybody there that I've dreamed of, which is very strange and doesn't make any sense).

Cool, imaginative dream last night, I guess. Well, actually not cool, but interesting and a pleasant experience despite the content.

I think I've forgotten much of it throughout the day, but...
I remember one part where there was me and a bunch of people outside possibly a bank, and there were construction workers on the road directly in front of us. They were pouring new cement (or gravel, whatever it is) into the ground to fix potholes or something. Then, they drove right to the side of the bank into the drive-through area, but it annoyed all of us. So, we got someone to argue against the construction workers- that person being the guy in the Paint department where I work who used to date that girl I used to talk about in the Schoolgirl Crushes thread. We really thought he could pull it off and get them out of here- but the conversation went like this- "This is OUR territory. We don't want you to mess anything up," and the construction worker firing back, "We own all the roads- EVERYTHING- SO YOU CAN'T TELL US WHAT TO DO!" The guy in Paint just looked troubled and couldn't do anything about it, and I just felt bad for him.  :-\

The other part was that me and a bunch of people (again, i'm guessing this group is just a bunch of coworkers) went to some mansion and took a tour. There's only one thing I can still remember about the tour. There was a big hall which contained areas with enormous piles of gifts (the ceiling was extremely high (at least 100 feet, i'd say)) and a banner with a name on it. Each one of those names was a name of a coworker, and the area represented gifts that they could possibly take to the afterlife if they died. As I walked through the hallways, I noticed that each person had gifts that were peculiar to their tastes (for example, the girls had huge stuffed teddy bears and the guys had computers, TVs, and football jerseys). When I came across my name, they only had the basics (and the area was small in comparison to the others)- smaller teddy bears, candy, etc. I figured no one knew what I really want... (although that's not entirely true)

Last night, I dreamed I went with my friend back to his old high school in Cali, Columbia (i guess it must've been some type of reunion or something).
In reality, Friday night, I had sent in 24 friend requests to all of the cute girls I wanted to on his friend list, and so far 11 have added me, and 6 are pending- so I'm assuming 7 denied.
(This explains the part where I see a ton of girls greeting us outside the school).

Anyways, the school in my dream looked nothing like the picture I saw of it. It was either being torn down or in the middle of construction, and we were walking around the second floor. There were no hand railings or anything, since they were taken off. I sit down for a second, and then get up and look behind me. In the distance, there was a lady pushing a stroller with a baby in it. However, she was completely unaware of the fact that the railings were taken off and couldn't really see where she was going. Before I could even open my mouth to shout and tell her to stop, she and her baby in the stroller fall off the edge of the inside 2nd story and onto the ground of the 1st and turn into a pool of blood.

Yeah, that wasn't a very pleasant one...

I dreamed that my mother, who is almost 89, came for a surprise visit, only she was young and pretty, as she used to be. I tried to call my brother (who is her caregiver) to tell him she was here, and he said he was glad to have a break from her.  Not a very subtle dream.
