I'm also eager to hear the new Gorguts (Luke, their lead guitarist, is a huge fan of Penderecki, Schnittke, et al!), and I'm also pleased to see that Coroner has reformed. There are some wonderful videos from a recent show in Lausanne.
Then I'll have to check this band out!  :)

Morbid Angel is my overall favorite metal band (although their new CD has some alarming elements--techno???). I also like tech death bands such as (old) Cryptopsy, Necrophagist, Obscura, and Decrepit Birth. I also like some prog bands, too, such as Dream Theater and Symphony X.

Here is a hilarious video of Hitler reacting to the new Morbid Angel CD!! (Too bad the spelling isn't better, but it's still funny!)

That certainly captures MetalsHeads' myopic obsessiveness.

Well, they have the whole album on youtube now. It's a very odd one.

Ataraxia

I have been listening to some "extreme" metal lately and as usual found one or two bands I really like within genre. For death metal it seems to be Nile. Of course, I haven't heard everything death metal and will probably back off from the hard stuff for a while now.

Maybe.

I have also started a two-year subscription to Decibel magazine.  ;D

Whenever somebody mentions dm I immediately want to get back into it, but the time investment would take so long. More than most subgenres, it's an effort to sort through the reams of generic fan-service and the inspired stuff :(

Agreed. And just think, I like pretty much all genres of music so my music life is a living hell.  >:D

Anyone know any good folk metal albums, ones with clean vocals (for the most part anyway). I'm digging Tyr, so yeah, like that.  ;D

Thanks.

Tyr are kind of an anomoly - bands in the style with clean vocals tend to be lighter than them, bands that sound similar are either power metal or pagan without folk influences...

Otyg (two albums - kind of creaky and low-fi, but very folky)
(Early) Skyclad
Cruachan (some unclean vocals, but not often)
Lumsk - Troll (on the lighter end of metal, and a bit new-agey, but fun)

Do give Einsiferum a try, though. They aren't exclusively clean vocaled but would be much worse any other way. Einsiferum are leaning towards power metal, though not as much as Elvenking (often labeled as folk, but not really - great band though). Finntroll is also great fun, but mostly unclean vocals - Korpiklaani in a similar style, but increasingly lighter vocals (although they kind of suck). Both are in a kind of drinking metal style. Folkearth is maybe nearest to Tyr in style, but their albums feature so many vocalists that you're bound to find some songs you like and some you don't. Youtube them all! :)

These disclaimers are a reccuring theme in folk/pagan recs - the better and more metallic the music, the less likely they are to be exclusively clean vocals :-X

Yeah, I figured it wouldn't be easy. It never is.

That's too bad. :(

I don't need completely clean vocals; I mean a dash of growling or screeching doesn't hurt.

Disfiguring ugly, my facial hair I had removed electrically.
I rejuvenated my energy cells. And regained my virility (grunt, grunt) . . .

You ever play on this site? I have an account there.

Anyway, this is for Greg.  :)

http://rateyourmusic.com/customchart?page=1&chart_type=top&type=album&year=alltime&genre_include=1&genres=Progressive+Metal&include_child_genres=t&include=both&limit=none&countries=
I'm assuming that's a ranking of the top-rated albums Progressive Metal albums among the people who go to that site?
Yep, Opeth at the top is no surprise.  ;D

Here's the one for Metal in general:
http://rateyourmusic.com/customchart?page=1&chart_type=top&type=album&year=alltime&genre_include=1&include_child_genres=1&genres=Metal&include_child_genres_chk=1&include=both&origin_countries=&limit=none&countries=

Kind of what I expected, with the classical Metal albums at the top. One important thing to note, though, is that the rankings aren't completely aligned with the rating. In fact, it's waaaaay off. It's like the rankings don't mean anything.

Yeah, they're rated by the site participants and there are a lot of metalheads, believe me.

The ranking is weird indeed. I've never tried to figure it out.  ;D

Josquin des Prez

The only "extreme" metal band i still listen to this days:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3an8jdsVM3s

Too bad its pretty much the same gimmick over and over. The riffs are consistently clever but its essentially the same formula for most of their songs. Works best in small doses.

First of all, I thought you didn't even listen to Meshuggah...

anyways, I totally know what you mean. When I first started listening to them, I'd like it but then get bored within 5 minutes. I don't know how, but after listening to them enough, I got addicted (I guess that's just me).

But that's exactly why I like it when they balance out their heavy stuff with their soft stuff. If it were up to me, there would a 50/50 balance.

This 6 minutes from Catch 33 (the second half of "In Death is Death"):

is so beautiful and eerie; in fact, it was the main influence for the last guitar piece I wrote.

I'm thinking Agalloch-The Mantle is what you need. You could also check out Cruachan for a Celtic twist on Folk Metal but it is several orders of magnitude lower in quality than the Agalloch. If you like The Mantle then you could also check the bands Empyrium and Fen but at this point we're moving away from folk and heading more into Black. For absolutely top draw Folkish inspired metal but with growls I would thoroughly recommend Drudkh-Autumn Aurora.
