Serious? I have it!   :o
And perhaps you love it.  No reason you shouldn't.  I just compare that with the monster box of Stravinsky at 22 discs and reflect that 37 discs could comprise nearly all of Beethoven's symphonies, quartets, piano sonatas, concertos, violin & cello sonatas, trios, and a bit more besides, and I'm a bit surprised that enough folks think Britten's of equal stature for the company to believe this issue will turn a profit.

Judging from here, it seems to be doing well.  I would probably have gotten it, except that I get the impression it is mostly vocal music.

In any case, I canceled an order today (for a 9CD "Original Master" set containing Martinon's Decca recordings from the 50's).  Does that mean I can order 9 CDs without breaking the pact?

Depends upon how interested you are in Britten of course. The thing with boxes like these are that they can be a very good purchase even if you only are interested in 40% of the stuff. Britten are interesting enough to me that I'd like to hear most of his output at least once. Probably would never happen without a box like this, too timeconsuming to aquire, and no way I will pay full price for discs I'm fully expecting never to play more than once in many cases.

But I do realize that paying 25£ for 50 discs and playing a couple of them makes for very bad value for money, and not the other way round as many seems to think. I have a couple of these and never again.

Lethevich

Not sure that I see a downside - it costs almost nothing, and as one of the most precocious composers of the century, most of the stuff will sound great.

Although if you feel an obligation to listen to every CD you own, that's one that I can't share :)

Two week into the new year and not one CD purchased yet.  (Two books, however... :-[ )

Yeah, that was my thought.

This is going to be difficult, but the only real obstacles I see are
1. Running into Harmonia Mundi stores on my travels in continental Europe
2. Hyperion's Please Buy Me

Please Buy Me is already testing me with an absolutely fantastic-sounding CD of Leo Weiner's violin sonatas. The samples are glorious and right up my alley. No! No! Bad boy!

I ordered it, so it will be disappearing from PBM soon.   >:D  Also picked up that 2-fer of English music for clarinet and piano.

Another day, and holding strong.

Between box sets and regular CDs I think I got about 60 this month alone. It's hopeless, so I guess I need to counter getting depressed over it by getting a few more. ;)

Well, looking at last year, I see that I found it a little too easy to be a little too trigger-happy.  Not that I am at all discontented with anything I fetched in . . . good quality-filtration in place.  Longer-term I am looking, not for cold turkey, but just for a bit more discipline.  Maybe if every other month, I forbear from purchases.

We'll see; I consider this a work-in-progress.

Don't know if it will help you (and others), but I always wait for sales/coupons/etc. before buying these days. This helps push the purchase into the future, where I find (as you may) that I don't always want what I wanted yesterday (or at least not as strongly). If nothing else, this helps prioritize what I really want.

Sometimes I also enjoy seeing how much I can get with a limited amount. It becomes a game, and I enjoy getting every penny's worth sometimes (not everyone feels this way though).

That's the right idea.  Actually, in most cases even in the apparent "spree" last year, I applied the same notion.

I have lost far too many opportunities with waiting for sales or promotions. Some of what I buy is typically released in limited quantities and somewhat difficult to find either online or in brick-and-mortar shops, and tends to get OOP easily; for that stuff, I usually check a few samples and pull the trigger if it appears to be interesting or good. For the rest of it, I do a fair amount of research and always check and compare prices at the brick-and-mortar shops I usually go to, the label (if they have an online shop) and across a number of online retailers across the US, Canada and Europe. This new feature of the Amazon iphone app has made it trivially easy to check prices on-the-fly--the app has a bar code scanner that finds the item automatically and navigates to its details, so in 10 seconds you can get a good idea if the item on your hand has a good price or not.

And I fully expect that quite some stuff I want is on it's end as a CD product, i.e. if available ever again it wil be as downloads. As i'm not interested in downloads, some stuff must be bought now if I want is on disc.

Of course, if a certain set of quartets were to show up, it just might trigger another buying spree.  Otherwise, I might be tempted to go a year.  Hmmm...what if I told myslef I couldn't buy anymore CDs until I've listened at least once to every one I already have?

Unassailable logic! ;)
