FAST TRACK Kalinnikov: Symphony No. 1 in G minor

Thank you for fast tracking this symphony and introducing me to it. I am not a classical music newbie, but my initial reaction on reading the list was KalinniWHO? I automatically assumed it was some 20th century composer and the piece was a 12 tone musical contraption or a post modern piece, which tends to evoke fairly negative reactions from me (sorry, I don't "get" most 20th century composers other than the 19th century holdovers like Rachmaninoff and Elgar). Fortunately, I did google Kalinnikov, and to my delight discovered a 19th century romantic Russian composer, recommended by none other than Tchaikovsky (very high praise in my book). I listened to the piece on Spotify yesterday and already a recording of it is on it's way to me via Amazon.

Speaking of modern pieces by a young living composer, I have finally found one I like! A recent concert by the BSO at Tanglewood introduced me to Jennifer Higdon's Loco, a fairly delightful short piece. Unfortunately I could not find any recordings of it as best as I can tell. I probably should dig up the recording of her violin concerto, which I do have, and actually listen to it.

Thanks again.

Sincerely,

Hany.

+3 Beethoven Symphony № 2 in D major Op,36 (What a perfect work it is! First symphony with a scherzo. But in fact this is the absolute pinnacle of this kind of symphony to which belong three last Mozart's symphonies and Haydn's London symphonies. Very important in Beethoven's progress - as prove to deal with that thoughts he used many years later to construct his 9th. And this Larghetto. A miracle.)

Masterpiece but really hard to interpret. Even Monica Huggett - who made absoutely best 1st and 5th ever - missed to reveal all its beauties failing with the second theme of first part. But we must evaluate work not its performances.

Yes I love it. Especially 2nd, 3rd and 4th part. But this 1st part. Nevertheless I am absolutely shure it can stand in one row with such marvellous work (this love scene!) like Roméo et Juliette.

Thats what I call fight club - 6 symphonies loved by everybody and none of them can be elevated.

Actually some of us have quite mixed feelings about Mahler. I have not voted against any of his symphonies and won't since he is much loved by many. As for me, I absolutely love his fourth symphony and am OK (lukewarm actually) with his first, but find his other symphonies to be plodding massive soundscapes. I have to admit that I have not listened to Mahler, other than his fourth, in quite a while. It may be time to dig up one of my box sets of his symphonies and have another listen, the scary thing is that I have several box sets.

Any suggestions for someone who likes his fourth symphony? Which other should I start with?

Sincerely,

Hany.
