So hard to find a comfortable niche in the world of classical music posting.  You either have to put up with gnats or giants.  Only one letter and a switch separate the two. ;)

Please explain this. I think it's a shame you don't post a lot here. We need all the classical lovers we can get! 8)

Welcome to the forum, Vesteralen, have a nice time here! :)

All the sites I visit have at least a modicum of relatively polite and helpful members, so I'm not really complaining.

And, I don't at all mind disagreement or even the occasional challenge - it can make you think.  And, the occasional light-hearted or humorous thread is great, too.

What makes me uncomfortable is smirking.  Some places have the teenage-boy smirkers in abundance (gnats), and some have the hyper-sophisticated, we-know-so-much-more-than-you-ever-will smirkers (giants).

When I get too tired of one kind of smirking, I go elsewhere (until I get tired of that kind of smirking).

So, I guess I am kind of complaining after all....

But, you didn't have to ask the question, did you?  ;)

Thank you.  Classical music lovers are really a very diverse bunch.  I've been a listener for 42 years and a poorly-educated and not very diligent player for 40 years off and on.

I like to share my thoughts and enthusiasms, but I'm not much for spelling out negative impressions because I've found that my opinions have changed over the years way too much on way too many things.  :)

(I also find that I invariably make at least one typo on every post...so you will always see "last edited on...")

Oh, I understand your predicament very well. The "other" classical forum was full of know-it-alls. I've tried my best to be as civil as I can on GMG. Sometimes it has gotten me into some hot water, but, overall, GMG is a great forum and I've made some good friends here. That's really all one could ask for out of an online community.

Why would being civil get you into hot water?

Oh, yeah....I should know the answer to that... ;)

I should have added that my own stubbornness and arrogance got me into hot water, which is, of course, something I'm not proud of.

Well, the way I look at it is, if someone can sense that they are being stubborn or arrogant, they probably really aren't....at least not by nature ;)

Yes, I understand.
I see you like Nielsen and Elgar; they're wonderful composers, I really love them too.

Yes, I did that tag when I first appeared here some time ago, but I still love those two.  I'm really not a radical fan of any one composer.  Like you (as I see from your signature), I listen to many composers from many different time periods.  One good thing on-line forums and music-review magazines have done for me is they have broadened my listening considerably.

Me either, but Shostakovich, Bartok, Ravel, Prokofiev, RVW, and Villa-Lobos I'm pretty fanatical about. These are my main favorites.
