So 300 posts and 3 months later, I finally get around to introducing myself.

I am a 14 year old who is madly passionate about classical music, whether listening, composing, performing or writing about it. I first got into classical music at around the age of 7 when my dad introduced me to the Dvorak Slavonic Dances which I absolutely adored. From there, I haven't stopped listening to music and my love for it continues to grow...
My absolute favourite composer is Mahler (hence username), other favourite composers include R.Strauss, Elgar, Ravel, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Beethoven, Shostakovich, Brahms, Nielsen, Sibelius, Dvorak, Martinu, Bortkiewicz, Novak, Karlowicz, Glazunov, Vaughan Williams, Chopin, Liszt, Koechlin... the list goes on!!
My ambition is to be a composer and conductor. At the moment, as well as going to a normal grammar school, I also was accepted and am now studying composition and piano at the Junior Department of the Royal Academy of Music, London. My music is mainly a mixture of romanticism and impressionism with hints of modernism as well. I shall post some here on GMG soon.

I have really enjoyed my previous few months here on GMG and am thoroughly looking forward to spending a lot more time on here. Thank you all for making me feel so welcome! :)

Best Wishes,
Daniel

Were all of the composers you listed known to you before joining the forum?

An "official" welcome, Daniel, and again, very impressed with your knowledge about classical music. When I was 14 I don't think I had even *heard* of half the composers you're listening to!

Have fun here, and good luck with your studies - that's great that you were accepted in the RAM program, and bodes well for your future.

Well, i noticed a few drinkers amongst your favorites. So just a gentle reminder: Lay Off the Alcohol (at least for now)!

Oh, and welcome!

Cheers!

Thank you :) Of course ;)

hmmm... Novak was a GMG discovery for me, but the others I knew well from before. Have discovered many other composers through GMG as well though, a very educational area! :)

Yes, I play the piano and cello as well, and am in the process of teaching myself orchestral percussion which is great fun :)
Thank you!

Great - I think playing the music is a must and learning more than one is a plus. I always wanted to learn piano, but alas, never did. That said, I loved the saxophone and would not have traded it for anything. It was (and is) a hugely fun instrument to play that has helped me appreciate all sorts of different music that I might never have been exposed to (just in case you want a fourth!).

Certainly. The saxophone must be a fun instrument to play, definitely! haha :) If I was to learn a fourth.... probably clarinet :) I hope to learn various other instruments in the future, would be very helpful for being a composer and conductor!

Fourteen!? I had no idea from your posts that you were so young. Astonishing. It's a nice thought that you'll be bringing down the average age of Elgar enthusiasts! (I have the impression that we tend to be mainly Boultians and Barbirollians, with at least half a century under our belts.)

Brahmsian

Yes, it is further proof that in many cases - age is just a number.

Although only 14, Daniel displays a level of maturity that is vastly beyond his years.  A very mature, solid young man with a very bright future ahead of him.  :)

TheGSMoeller

It makes me happy to see youngsters interested in great music.
Freshman year of high school was when I first became interested in Classical Music, my brother had already been playing the trombone for a few years, and I saw my first concert which was Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances.

Keep up the great posts, Daniel.

Ah, but some of us remain young in spirit  ;D

Wonderful - I just happen to be seeing Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances live tommorow :)
Thank you :)

Thank you, Daniel. I did get your message, but I'm still trying to figure out how the man's love interest will figure into the story. It appears that the ballet will be made longer if we include this new element into the story.

Wonderful!
It's a great piece to experience live, and also a challenge for the orchestra.
