Yes Great Gable good point, however my experience with GMG has been that some posters here have collections in the 1000s and have multiple >10 recordings of the same work, GMG members never seize to amaze me with their knowledge.

Indeed - I wasn't really referring to this forum but in general terms. It's still relevant but less so on here.

Marvin, who am I to question such faith? :)

But please indulge me in a little experiment: do sample on-line instead of two, for instance FIVE of the recordings mentioned just now, or on the excellent earlier thread that was linked above.
It will cost you just about 15 minutes extra, and I will be curious about the results! :)

PS:  Mark that Wurtz cover is hideous now that you mentioned it, but I am not one to judge a book by its cover...well at least not in this case anyway.

No, no, Marvin. You misunderstand: the cover you posted is that of a slimline boxed set reissue of the Wurtz recordings, and I think it looks okay. I'm referring to the relative ugliness of the original issue of this set, which has a small picture of Herr Mozart inset on a larger picture of the composer ... only in black and white NEGATIVE! :o It's really shockingly bad design.

Very well. But if you go blind looking at this, don't come crying to me ...

For Mozart's PS's there's always Horszowski on Arbiter. In bootleg sound but oh, so insightful!

Barring that, Uchida makes the grade admirably.

In this way he had a chance to have the rhythm drilled into him. And this was the beginning of a musical inclination in his descendants. JS Bach

One of the most satisfying acquisitions for me in the past year.

I stumbled accros this Box from Brilliant. Does anyone know where the recordings are coming from, which labels?
Medtner, Complete Sonatas, 7 cd's 18,99 euro's
Hamish Milne/Boris Berezovsky/Geoffrey Tozer, piano.

Google'd "Milne, Berezovsky, Medtner" and got this.
So perhaps it was originally from CRD?
HIP for all and all for HIP! Harpsichord for Bach, fortepiano for Beethoven and pianoforte for Brahms!

Harry - I have the 4-CD set of the Piano Sonatas & Forgotten Melodies on Chandos w/ Tozer - assume that is the source of his performances; but if Brilliant is offering a 7-CD box, must be a lot of 'other' piano works included?  Dave

Well I will order it and see.....
Is what you have of Tozer up to your standards Dave?

Harry - as you likely know, Geoffrey Tozer seems to 'specialize' in these lesser known composers; I believe he has 8 volumes out of Medtner's Solo Piano Works (plus one disc of the Piano Concertos); my main 'reading comparison' before purchasing the Tozer versions of the sonatas was the collection by Marc-Andre Hamelin (review by Rob Barnett may be of interest) - he seems to give an edge to Hamelin, whereas other reviewers liked Tozer equally or better - I enjoyed the Tozer performances (but have not listened to them in a while) - have not heard any of the sonatas done by Hamelin - hopefully, others who have heard both might provide some further insight?  Dave

I am completely lost about what to buy next. Perhaps Ravel's Complete Orchestral Works by Abbado? More Buxtehude's organ works on Naxos? I got interested of Cesar Franck. His Piano Quintet? Opera DVDs?
Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

Two extremely underrated works — the piano quintet easily stands beside the greats, and the Chausson quartet is pleasantly dense and rewarding.
