I stumbled accros this Box from Brilliant. Does anyone know where the recordings are coming from, which labels?
Medtner, Complete Sonatas, 7 cd's 18,99 euro's
Hamish Milne/Boris Berezovsky/Geoffrey Tozer, piano.

I have just one LP of the Milnes Medtner recording and it is smashing! You won't be disappointed. I already have the Hamelin and would not hesitate to get the Milnes as well If I see it in store. Get it!

Yes it can be daunting huh........ ;D

I have a long wishlist (Amazon) and I buy something from it when a seller offers it at low price. At the moment everything seems to cost £5-8 +shipping. Nothing is very cheap. Frustrating.

Also, I have started to feel I have too much music. Not kidding.  :P

Yes, as crazy as it sounds. I have explored new composers to me but it seems there are no others like Elgar (in sense how deeply the music strikes me).

It would be cool to buy large cheap boxsets of composers like Dittersdorf, Fasch, Finzi, Hasse, Tunder, Villa-Lobos... but no boxsets for non-canonic composer...  :-\

So, even Elgar box on Brilliant Classics was canceled? How nice for me!  >:(

You really should send all your non-Elgar recordings to me. I will in turn send the money I would have to spend to acquire them to charity. This way everyone wins.

Not canceled my friend, enlarged with more recordings, and scheduled to be released later, no exact date yet, they replaced some recordings for better ones.....

I am completely lost about what to buy next.

Have you tried Medtner? It is late romantic, tuneful but texturally dense and structurally complex. Writing that doesn't reveal all it's secrets at first listen and I honestly think you might enjoy it.
Try 2nd and 3rd Piano Concertos played by Demidenko on Hyperion:

What I mean is it seems I have already found most of my favorite composers. If I stop exploring now I probably won't miss much. I have hundreds of wonderful CDs of classical music (Elgar and non-Elgar) to enjoy the rest of my life. Of course I will keep buying because I am greedy and curious as anyone else.

I have felt that way, since I couldn't find anything that impacted me as much as Sibelius (and still haven't!). My artist friend said something to me about how painting for him is mostly trivial. I realized then that it is similar for me with music. It is mostly going to be "just good," occasionally "not good," but the few times that it really makes an impact are worth trudging through all the stuff that doesn't make an impression. Even if you don't like a piece, at least then you have expanded your context in which to place other music you hear.

It was Sibelius that broke me out of my mindless and misguided "crusading modernist," "sound-for-the-sake-of-sound" rut I was in when I first got into art music, and caused me to become obsessed with the "profound inner logic."

I have to say I know nothing about this composer. Dense and complex are usually my thing so your recommendation might be very good for me. Naxos website says Sergey Taneyev (my favorite Russian composer) was his counterpoint teacher.

Hyperion discs tend to be pricy (lowest price £7.15 on marketplace). I got interested of a Naxos disc with PC 2 + Piano Quintet.

That's a good advice, however I try to buy music I like.

Try saving few £ elsewhere and buy the Hyperion (for the concertos).

I own the Naxos CD of the Medtner PC 1 and 3 and can make an unqualified recommendation.

Hyperion is preparing a special brochure in which all the cd 's are sold for midprice....
In Holland we allready have that, so I think of buying 80% of that, the rest I have allready..... ;D

Well, I already ordered the Naxos. I sampled it and the Piano Quintet sounded very good. Someday I may get that Hyperion for bargain price.

Yeah, I am sure the Naxos discs are good if not the best.

Well, I hear works of some composer on radio. I can also listen to sound clips online. From those experiencies I try to extrapolate how much I like the music. We can't buy everything (well, Harry can).

Hyperion re-releases some discs on their Helios budget label but of course the selection is very limited. Did you mean that?

No, no, no, the original stuff, all 50 of them
