Suzuki has done 2 different recordings of the St John Passion for BIS - a CD one first, and then this DVD was a live broadcast.

I've heard good things about both, but I'm quite attracted to the DVD after seeing some of it on Youtube (how do people get away with putting up entire discs on Youtube... but in any case it's only for sampling as far as I'm concerned).

One thing I'm wondering is whether the DVD comes with any printed text. I know there are subtitles on the disc, but to be honest I also quite like having a printed German text to look at.

Anybody familiar with this recording? It looks (and sounds) intriguing...

Georges Aperghis: Wölfli-Kantata

Probably should have bought this at the Neue Vocalsolisten concert last Sunday, when they did Vittriool (2001) - one section of the piece - and incredible. Here's David Gutman's review on Gramophone:

Came across this one in my favourite second hand shop:

Any thoughts? Would it be a good supplement to my Herreweghe?

No. 5 live & No. 8 are the only ones I know, but they are excellent.

Suzuki has done 2 different recordings of the St John Passion for BIS - a CD one first, and then this DVD was a live broadcast.

In fact, there are three. Before the BIS period, Suzuki did a live Johannes-Passion for the Japanese label King Records, with a.o. Yoshikazu Mera and Akira Tachikawa doing the alto arias.

Here's the 2-CD:

Considering this performance: it's good. Not mandatory IMO, but worthwhile having, like his BIS CD recording .... like almost all of Suzuki's Bach recordings.
I have a different issue of the DVD (it has been issued at least 3 times) which was very cheap at the time, with only a tracklist and a short story about the composition.
