Don

A Chandos disc of Debussy piano music, vol. 1, played by Jean-Efflam Bavouzet.  His set of the Ravel piano music was stunning, so getting this one is an easy choice.

Rihm's one of those composers who you can never quite tell what you're getting till you listen, because he does about eight different styles all with great panache.

Tutuguri's Rihm in a sort of neo-brutalist mode: lots of pounding drums and rasping brass for about two hours, while the second disc is a more eclectic mix tending towards a post-Hartmannesque mixture of modernism and neo-Romanticism. The works on the latter disc would serve as a good introduction to the composer's more recent thought, as the styles exemplified on it seem to be becoming more important to Rihm as he ages.
"I don't at all mind actively disliking a piece of contemporary music, but in order to feel happy about it I must consciously understand why I dislike it. Otherwise it remains in my mind as unfinished business."
-- Aaron Copland, The Pleasures of Music

Edward, you're my hero! :D
Exactly the comment I was seeking. Informed and informative. Bravo!
My choice is made. I'll order the second one (concertos). Will then figure if there'll be a sequel.

Both are available as downloads at eclassical for just a few bucks.

I've noticed this CD of Sergio Fiorentino playing Rachmaninoff's preludes has surfaced in a couple of stores I frequent. I'm very curious about Fiorentino (don't have any of his recordings) and need a rec. of the Rach preludes on CD--BUT I"m not sure this performer is a good match for the music. Opinions???

I'd say get it. Not because I love it (my first and only impression wasn't that strong), but because many people I respect do love it. Who else do you have in these works?  :)

His Rachmaninoff is a little stale for my liking. I don't seem to remember being all that taken with this disc. What's the price?

Yes I would place at least three ahead of him, who happen to be in much better sound. Ashkenazy, Richter and Anievas.  :)

I don't have any other recordings of these works. I think I'll grab the Ashkenazy mostlikely. Fiorentino's stuff is hard to find though unfortunately, so maybe I"ll get both.

The Ashkenazy on Decca Legends has better sound (a superior remastering) FWIW.

Don

A couple of new Hyperion releases have caught my attention: Bach's Cello Suites from Steven Isserlis and Vol. 2 of Angela Hewitt's traversal of the Beethoven piano sonatas.

Dull as ditchwater. As was this duo's other thematic CD Apres un Reve (also poorly recorded). Thankfully, DG quit after two.

What, if anything, was the hype about Maisky anyway? I found nothin gof his that I heard even remotely interesting.

Thank you Boris G, O Mench and Steve for the honest feedback, I just removed this item off my list of future purchases.

I'm just about set to head down to the CSO Store, for a couple of recordings. Anyone have any suggestions?

Get these:

Mahler 3 Haitink, just out today!

Tribute to Boulez 2CD set: includes a fantastic Till Eulenspiegel and a phenomenal Janacek Glagolitic Mass among other goodies.

The Soloists from the Orchestra II and III are also worthwhile. II includes some gorgeous Nielsen, Atterberg and Debussy. III has some excellent Rosza, Gould and Korngold.
