Octave,

The Mackerras Brahms is on my want-list. The Harnoncourt Brahms I purchased in the middle of last year, but so far, responsible listener to new acquisitions that I am, I've only heard the Third, which was a superb account of an unusual variety - operatic, in a way, because it's very dramatic and dark, with both speed and sweep.

-

Presto is holding a clearance, and I'm considering these.

The above are $7 each; I've never heard the Mozart Mass in C minor, K427, but I do have the Naxos reading of the Verdi requiem.

For $10, a DVD of Gerald Finley and the OAE doing Don Giovanni:

And these are $10-12 a pop:

Anything here essential or definitely non-?
The Bliss set is very interesting, never thought Bliss was that good. Pappano's Verdi set is very fine, and Mozart's c-minor Mass is a superb work (but I don't manage to see what recording that is).

I have never found just the right requiem (until maybe recently) and have not heard the Pappano. But it is a difficult piece to do just right. The Naxos is pretty good, so if you are satisfied with it, there is no real need to get another (unless you just want a different view). The Solti version is also excellent. Bychkov was my most recent acquisition (from Berkshire as it is otherwise only available on mp3 from Amazon) and I may finally have ended my search for a while. It isn't perfect, but it comes closer than many others.

I have some of the Mackerras as separate discs and it is very good (especially for the price)!

I'm currently in the process of selling off my Beethoven and Mozart collection. Not that there's much to sell.
If you're smart, you'll rip them first. Don't disregard the possibility that you will come to your senses some day. There's a reason these composers live....... ;)

Technically you are right. From a practical viewpoint however, as these doubtlessly consists of less than 0,1% of John's holdings, I guess he's not the greatest threat to the industry.

I would like to see the specific legal foundations of those grandiloquent conclusions.

If I buy a book and I copy all its content in handwritten form and then I sell it, I'm a criminal... of course.

And what about public libraries, where people read books without paying for them?

Not in Norway either. But whether it is if you then sell the originals is a legal very grey area. Thankfully I'm not a lawyer.

The Beecham is only essential if you like Delius' music, if not, then it's not going to be something worth purchasing just to have it.

Having not seen the track listing for that Beecham set until tonight--I didn't realize how much Delius was in that set.  You're quite right--it's an essential Delius set.

Question to Todd--

Have you seen a track listing or a European/US release date for that?

Jeffrey, the HMV Japan listing for that Szell box includes a complete listing of what's on each CD, but unfortunately, the listing is in Japanese - and the Japanese characters in the track listing are images rather than text, so Google can't translate them.

Some of it is clear. I think CD 1 is Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra and Janacek's Sinfonietta; I think the Beethoven symphonies are all there; there's a CD of Johann Strauss waltzes.

kishnevi

Grrr.  Now that song "I'm turning Japanese" has popped into my head out of nowhere and turned into an earworm.....

Well, at least I got a price and a count of the number of CDs.

Sarge approves of literally every performance in there!

But seriously, he probably does. Also, seriously, as a young person who has comparatively few of the treasures of the back catalogue, opportunities like the Bernstein Symphony Edition, Gigantic Szell Box, and the super-cheap Sony box set series in general are incredible bargains for me. I've only been collecting for ten-ish years, so it's more likely than not that, say, a huge box of All The Stokowski will be entirely new to me.

You're forgetting that I will be buying recordings with my birthday and Christmas money when both roll around.

Not yet, but if it is truly comprehensive, the mind boggles at the goodies to be had.

(Perhaps Sony can redo the Bruno Walter Edition, too, and include all of his Columbia recordings, including the often superior mono ones.)
