I agree with Moonfish.  Uchida is one of the finest Mozart interpreters out there.  Be prepared for classical elegance.
I  agree as well... A good friend of mine, always extreme in his likes and dislikes, dismissed this set as "cursi" (an untranslatable Spanish word, somewhat close to "kitsch") and mannered  ???  >:( . The word that comes to my mind, though, is "Apollonian". I find this rendition of the sonatas superb.   :)

I agree. The Uchida is great.
You also need van Oort on period instruments ...

My local store has this new for about $20. Any thoughts?

You will end up with several if not many recordings of these pieces!  I own even the Gould now!

For your reference or others', the Philips Complete Mozart Edition's Vol. 9 (2006 reissue, 12cd) includes the Uchida sonatas plus another ~seven discs of stuff by Ingrid Haebler and others.  It's not necessarily a better way to go, but FYI.
(A big box of Habeler's Mozart/Schubert was issued ~1 year ago by Universal Asia iirc, the Schubert of which has been domestically reissued since then.  I am attracted to the big set but the prices I have seen are not a steal.)

Thanks for all the feedback! Looks like I have to get this one. $4 disc does break my purchasing rule, but sometimes you just have to splurge a little ;)
BTW Octave, I bought one disc of Haebler's Mozart sonatas about 15 years ago, but it just didn't do it for me (and I tried it many times--that's from back in the one-disc-a-month days). I have high hopes for Uchida.
It's all good...

As an alternative recommendation to Uchida (tried it, the magic didn't happen), you might consider Pires' 1st recording on Denon, reissued by Brilliant:  :)

Any thoughts/recommendations/impressions on Harnoncourt's Monteverdi recordings? This comes out in May..

I have the individual releases (except the recital disc). Very highly recommended.

Yes the Poppea is good, but I've enjoyed most the DVDs he made with Ponnelle

Of course I'm not really considering this, as I have too many cds already (including a new Mozart Sonata cyle).  But if I were considering this, going for 77 Euros from German Amazon, and $103 at ImportCD, is there some reason why it would not be considered the wonderful bargain it seems to be at first glance?  Thanks.

I think your logic is wonky. All this 'too many' and "Mozart Sonata cycle' stuff clouds what is really a very simple issue.  You don't have it. Therefore you need it.

As an added bonus, disc 17 played backwards sounds like "Karajan is dead". You really ought to to try it.  >:D

That is intriguing, and I have only the Mozart sonatas and the latest Schubert disc, so very little duplication for me.  I'm not saying I'll buy it, or anything . . .

It seems to me this would be a more persuasive argument if I was the director of new purchases for, say, the library of congress... :-\
You would be more persuasive if you could say something like "It looks so good I just ordered it myself"! If you got it first, you could tell me whether its a good purchase :)

It would be interesting to hear Chung play, but the disc is filled with small, popular pieces/encores.  Maybe he will record something a bit more substantial, or not.
