That Gemini/EMI disc should be on sale or at least for such a cheap price that you can't say no.

Not a bad choice, but you might consider Christopher Hogwoods famous account.
Much better as the present one you consider IMO.

Q,

Haven't heard this one myself but Gramophone reviewed what appears to be the same performances in different editions.

Reviews were mixed.

Veit Bach-a baker who found his greatest pleasure in a little cittern which he took with him even into the mill and played while the grinding was going on. In this way he had a chance to have the rhythm drilled into him. And this was the beginning of a musical inclination in his descendants. JS Bach

Thanks donwyn:)
It does seem there is some general consensus on the qualities of the 5th, maybe I should consider tracking down its seperate issue.

French reviews like the one quoted in that link are typical french dross. They can walk ecstatic about anything, including what's not worth mentioning. Ok, now that it's off my chest (can't stand that kind of flowery metaphysical drooling) - that 5th is excellent, although one of my good friends didn't think it was that great. Blame either my french genes for that, of his stiff upper english lip :D.

I just went throught his 8th in Bamberg from 1982  and I'm tempted to say that late Jochum = great Bruckner.

I think that Mozart's piano sonatas desperately need HIP.

That being said, before I went for HIP I found Pires' 1st recording for Denon (now on Brilliant I believe) to be very good indeed (preferred them to the later DG).

The Denon set (dirt cheap on Brilliant Classics) is very good. She plays with authority and passion, without going to stylistic excesses in any way. I prefer her marginally to the a bit more heavy-handed Würtz, but regarding the low cost you might be able to acquire both.
Don´t know the DG set.

I agree with Que though, that period instruments are desirable in these works, and whether to chose Brautigam(BIS), Badura-Skoda(Astreé), Bilson(Hungaroton) or van Oort (Brilliant Classics) is difficult to tell, since by now I have listened only to parts of the sets. For the time being I tend to prefer the poetry of Badura-Skoda.
Reality trumps our fantasy far beyond imagination.

Dave, this is a yes if you're looking for another recording of the quintet in good sound:
Brahms, Johannes - SQs + Piano Quintet - Emerson SQ w/ Leon Fleisher - 2 CD set

Haven't heard any of the others.

Thanks, I have Würtz, do think she's a bit of a pounder & don't care for the acoustic of the recordings.  Have a disc of Pires playing Mozart ctos with Abbado and like her touch very much.  I often prefer period instruments but rarely like the recorded pianoforte--what I've heard often seems tinny.  But I just received van Immerseels period ctos and am looking forward to trying them--if I like, then I may have to try one of the pianoforte boys.
