Why would you want it without the narrator? That's like saying you want a concerto without the soloist.

Ligeti Cello Concerto, Improved.

Not even sans narration?

No, of course I love the suite.  But the full story seems interminable, and not that great a story to begin with.  I have 2 recordings of the full worK: Sting/McKellan/Redgrave and Gielgud/Courtenay/Moody.

Jens Christensen plays Spanish music, I'm tempted to say anything he plays will be worth knowing.

Yes, and this one is no exception. However his choice of organ is not quite up to the task. He plays the modern Carsten Lund organ in Præstø kirke, DK. This is a medium sized (24 stops) organ, which doesn´t sound that Iberian, and which isn´t tuned in meantone temperament but in Kirnberger III. So the sound is lacking in terms of authentic "atmosphere".

Excellent, I find. Very recommendable... but not, perhaps, in my top-3 or top-5.

JCBuckley

Anyone listened to this? Aparté is on special offer at MDT at the moment, and I'm tempted to add this to the Lully that's already in the basket.

I've read some outstanding reviews of this and have it on my wish list - but unfortunately I don't remember the references.

Peter, Sanderling's Sibelius is quite good, but not a favorite of mine. Vanksa, Berglund (Helsinki cycle - EMI), Bernstein, and Segerstam (Helsinki cycle - Ondine) are my favorites.

Leon Berben plays Sweelink on the organ of St Jacques in Liège.

Revisiting this yesterday I was struck by the exquisite sound of this particular organ (St.Jaques, Liege) and Berben´s fine understanding of it. Only four Works on the CD are by Sweelinck, the others are by his pupils, and among them four works by Scheidemann. The CD enables us to do an interesting comparation between the styles of these two composers, Scheidemann´s music being sweet and serious (as it has been said before), Sweelinck´s music most often serious and lacking the sweetness. Berben´s style tends towards seriousness, but still the sweetness of Scheidemann stands out. I am happy, that I acquired this CD and I look forward with tension to Berben´s Sweelinck set on Aeolus.

Thanks! Anything that makes it redeemable?

Thanks John! I am quickly getting very impressed with the Vanska & the Lahti SO forces..... I guess Sibelius fever leads to a wish to hear different interpretations.  >:D

Hey Bill - don't know the composer but love the look of the band, and I can't resist the archlute!  Dave :)

Bach, CPE - Solo KB Works on piano w/ Ana-Marija Markovina - I've been eyeing this one for a while and keep reading the superb comments here, mainly in the listening thread - 26 discs - now on the Amazon USA MP for $100 - I've already got a dozen CDs of these works but most w/ Belder on other varied KB instruments, so would be a great contrast!  Has anyone seen a better price?  Dave :)

Dave,
Great box! Amazon FR MP has new copies for 60 euros plus shipping. It adds up to about $80 after shipping to the US.

CPE Bach: I sent an email to BIS asking them if they will reissue the Spanyi discs in a big box. His traversal of the music is in 2 series: the solo keayboard works, played on tangent piano or clavichord, and the concertos. The latter is the one I'm most interested in. In which case I'd go for the Markovina box of the solo works. OTOH, if BIS reissues the whole shebang in a single box, I'll go for that. Decisions, decisions... ::). It doesn't help that I already own a dozen of those 40+ discs...  ???

Just be aware that these may not be truly complete. The CEO of BIS, Robert von Bahr, has made several snarky remarks about the Markovina series and its claim that 26 CDs is truly complete. BIS's solo keyboard series with Miklos Spanyi is up to Vol. 29 with more to come.
