Lately I have felt bored/frustrated with this forum. Somehow I feel myself very different from others and I don't feel I can connect with anyone (well, with Harry perhaps). The active discussions doesn't interest me much and threads I find interesting are dead or filled with insane nonsense. Just look at Elgar's thread.  ::) Where is the discussion about the best performance of Elgar's 2nd symphony? Where is the discussion about Elgar's cantatas? I feel I am the only true Elgarian here.

I couldn't care less about the endless discussions about historical recordings. Hey, I am on the 21th century! I am not interested of noisy mono recordings. I am into crystal clear multichannel sound! I am also sick of the Mahler/Bruckner/Beethoven hysteria and almost nonexistent interest toward obscure composers. Who the hell buys 10 cycles of Sibelius symphonies while neclecting most of important composers?

Nobody seems to know anything about Nikolaus Bruhns. Even Buxtehude is very obscure to many. Dittersdorf is laughed at for his name. Where is the discussions about the great Benda music family? I think I am the only one here having Philipp Wolfrum's music.

If I say something, Karlhenning and M forever say something that makes me feel bad for days. I'd have much better self-confidence without this forum. So, I will be less active here...
Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.

I have the music by Philipp Wolfrum! :)
Read what you think is oke for you and ignore the rest, that's my method and it works.
There are more Elgar admirers as you think, and where ever you go, you always meet people you don't like.
I for one would be very sorry to see you go, and be less participating on GMG, that way you give your antagonist more room.
And that is not a good idea!
So I forbid you to go, hear? $:)

You have Wolfrum's organ CD on MDG? That's why I said I can connect with you here.  ;)

I do ignore many things around here. It's just why spend hours every day just to ignore?

There are Elgar fans around here (about 10 I think) but not enough to have a deep discussion.

I'm not leaving because this forum gives a lot of valuable information too and every now and then I am able to feel myself welcome here. Some members here are always very friendly.  :)

And lots of Buxtehude/Bruhns I bought on your recommendation, Dittersdorf is among my favourite composers, and I have a lot of music by him, and of course Benda is in my repertoire too. :)

My friend do you have any idea how much abuse I get over me, in PM's and on the board it self, that is ten times worse as with you believe me.
Some PM's are devastating in content, and the few lines Iago wrote about me aren't exactly flattering.

Is that right?  People actually take the trouble to send you insulting PM's?  Why would anyone bother to do that? ???

Well you are an exception here Harry. Your taste is so broad it overlaps with everyone including me. Those composers are just examples. Everyone should find his/her own favorite obscure composers.

I'm sorry to hear you have to suffer abuse too. Some members here seem amazingly hostile and rude. I could take all the shit better if I wasn't so vulnerable. I have had a problem of low self-esteem all my life and the current unemployment makes things 100 times worse.

Trouble ;D
Sometimes the epistle is that long, that I do not bother to read them anymore.
But believe me, there are people on the board that have a deep hate for me.
Not that its bothering me, but I wanted to take some pressure of the shoulders of our young friend here, by telling, that I get hit almost every few days. You must have read what Iago wrote about me, that is if you have email notification, devastating.
But he is a good sort of fellow. ;D

Yes, I've had the same trouble. I mean: finding myself in boards where discussions were far away from my interests. I used to write on an italian board too, which was pretty desolate if compared to this one, but the leitmotif was similar; a few Beethoven's obsessed users, a lot of contemporary music mocking. A sort of nice mausoleum haunted by indefatigable worshippers of the past. The good thing is that I've met a lot of interesting people too, which now I'm planning to meet and often call by phone. The frustration of not having my interests corrisponded has been left apart filling it with a lot of conversations with myself, reading and listening. Don't make yourself a prisoner of today's industry of opinion.
Aaron Copland catched the trouble with our times, when he wrote that today musical interests are very narrow and restricted to a very short historical period.

I wouldn't be so catastrophic by the way, and would follow Harry's advice, to choose what it fits you and leave all the rest where it is.

I didn't know about that abuse and hate. I can't figure out the reason Harry because you are always polite. People envy you for your purchases?

I'm affraid I haven't seen Iago's writing about you... ??? On what thread did that happen?

This thread was erased after Iago's posting!

And yes envy has a lot to do with the hate PM's.

Narrow-minded people is a turn-off for me. I don't mind if people disagree with me in an open-minded way. That's when I feel I can learn something from them and vice versa.

Yes, Harry's advice is to be followed here...  ;)

No. Laughed at the preoccupations of his music. If people listened to his music with open ears they'd change their mind but they can't because they are narrow-minded.

Of course I do envy a little bit your purchases too but I am also happy for you and I'd never hate you for such a reason. That would be childish.  ;D

Nobody seems to know anything about Nikolaus Bruhns.

Perhaps because there isn't much to know? AFAIK he died quite young and what he left is one CD worth of vocal music and an couple of CDs worth of organ music (give or take a few).

The cantata album on Harmonia Mundi is superb - but we have very little to go on on forming an opinion on this composer.

This seems to me be part of the problem.  You are assuming that that's why people choose not to listen to Dittersdorf (those that have heard of him.)  That may not be the reason at all.  For example, not everyone has either the time or the ambition to listen to absolutely everything, so a certain amount of pre-selection is necessary.  On whatever basis that selection is made, perhaps Dittersdorf just doesn't make the cut (for whatever reason.)

However if you always impute the worst motives to those who don't share your enthusiasms, inevitably you will experience a backlash.

I am also sick of the Mahler/Bruckner hysteria...

Currently these are the stats:

Wagner's Valhalla - 80 posts

Mahler Mania - 263 posts

Bruckner Abbey - 304 posts

Your Elgar thread - 484

I'm depressed too. My favorite composers, Mahler and Wagner, aren't even on the first page any longer and clearly aren't even half as popular as Elgar.

Nobody seems to know anything about Zemlinsky, Magnard, Wetz, Schmidt, Stenhammar or Havergal Brian. I'm more depressed than you are  ;D

Sarge
the phone rings and somebody says,
"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."
