That is uncalled for.  Greg addresses you seriously and respectfully, I think that he deserves the same in return.
Yeah, I was trying to give an explanation, which was completely ignored.

Florestan, have you ever actually worked in a customer service job before? Maybe you like dealing with menial tasks and problems all day which do absolutely nothing to inspire or stimulate the mind and maybe you are a happy-go-lucky people person (I know a few), but a lot of people don't come with the personality for it. One of the girls I work with left the place I work to join the military and said her training was "almost as miserable as working [where I work]."

Maybe in the sense that maybe he shouldn't have said it so out loud but after reading all those comments, I am sure he is not the only one who was tempted. Besides, maybe greg needs to hear that.

Enlighten me why I'm "still a kid." It would be nice to be a kid- does that alone make me a "kid?" If so, then that's fine.
Or is it because I work and can't move out of my parents house because they don't pay me enough, and saying that money is important is childish? Or is it because I don't go to the bar to drink alcohol and socialize constantly? (I do other things there)...

I'm just interested to know which of these makes me a kid (or am I missing something?)

I don't think it's uncalled for at all. Florestan was joking around hence the :D. I don't think this comment was intentionally meant to hurt Greg's feelings at all. Greg's a pretty reasonable guy. I certainly wouldn't object to it. I KNOW I'm a crazy. :P

John, did you say something about you liking another girl at work?
There's a new girl where I work I just saw yesterday- hiring season again already, I guess...

You are a 3 year old with sufficient fund to have CDCDCD, that's all.

Yeah, and you are crazy!

Some women like men like that. You just have to be patient for her to find you.  ;D

Same for you, greg! Take heart!

I was actually just joking. Is this new girl cute? Try to talk to her.

Not sure if I get your sense of humor, Paul.  :D
Perhaps you might want to take a short break from living in China? You might be due for a visit back to the US, if you have the funds...  ;)

I will be in Baltimore on October 14. A week later I will be going to Vegas and LA.

Yep. Don't know a thing about her, but will naturally find out, anyways.

Side note...
I'm know I'm weird/crazy. That's the problem- it's like being a Cubicuboctahedron being forced into the opening of a circle.  :-X

Wow, from one side to the other! I've always wondered what LA is like; cool that you're visiting your old city again.

You're a kid by virtue of your youth. It's that simple. There's nothing wrong with being a kid. It's wonderful in many ways. Enjoy it! Few things are sadder than a youngster burdened prematurely with adult responsibilities. Not even the perpetual adolescent who's unwilling to grow up.

These days adolescence normally lasts until about age 30, at least in the U.S. Growing up doesn't really start until the first year we're out on our own, earning our own living, maintaining our own residence and car, paying our own bills, being responsible at work, and so on. Age alone doesn't do it, and some folks are able to put it off for years by staying in school, collecting degrees and post-docs.

The next big driver of maturation comes with having children of your own--that is, if you take having children seriously, unlike so many these days in our dreadfully permissive society that encourages perpetual adolescents to bring children into the world whom they're utterly incapable of parenting.

I'll be 26 in a week and I DEFINITELY don't feel like an adult. Anytime I'm required to evince some semblance of adulthood and put-togetherness, it feels like a pathetic, tawdry sham. :(

Inspiring words. ::) ;) Wait until you're 30. :)

Florestan, have you ever actually worked in a customer service job before?

Yes I have. For 4 years my main task was to recite by heart the same text to potential customers. For a change, I had to typewrite in Word tons of pages of handwritten technical regulations.

No I didn't like it but I didn't whine and complain all day long either. I thought about quitting many times but eventually I gave up the idea. After all, that job paid my bills and allowed me to enjoy a decent amount of life's pleasures amd that was a good enough reason for coming to terms with it.

Quote
and maybe you are a happy-go-lucky people person (I know a few)

During those years I went daily to the workplace at 9 am and left it at 6 pm --- but I can assure you that outside this time frame I didn't waste a single thought on how boring or uninspiring my job was. I just had other things to do and think about.

Quote
, but a lot of people don't come with the personality for it.

You keep complaining about how dull and unstimulating is your job but may I ask what do you do in a concrete way in order to get another, more inspiring one? May I ask what is the profession you educated yourself for? For instance, I am a mechanical engineer by trade; if you were to have a job that would suit your training, what would it be?

No. A sense of nostalgia for the lost paradise of childhood is absolutely normal and fine.

None of the above either.

I'm just interested to know which of these makes me a kid (or am I missing something?)

You are indeed missing something, namely that the world we live in is not perfect (and it cannot become so either); that the responsibility for our lives lies ultimately on ourselves; that one has unlimited aspirations but limited possibilities; that life is what we make of it and that if one is happy or unhappy depends less on the state of the economy than on the state of one's own mind. It is in this sense that I called you a kid, because each of these facts are completely alien to a kid's mindset: he thinks he lives in a perfectly secure world, where mommy/daddy/grannies/Santa Calus/whomever are directly responsible for his happiness and wellbeing, where his whims are more often than not satisfied and where life is an interrupted and stimulating playground.

Now if by calling you a kid I offended you I sincerely apologize --- but as Paul correctly sensed, I just couldn't take anymore your incessant whining and complaining accompanied by doing exactly nothing to change your situation.

At least you know you have a maturity problem.  Next step is to do something about it.  Of course, it's easier to be an adult when there isn't much choice.  By the time I was 26, I had a family with three children; being adult was essential.

My problem with not feeling like an "adult" is that I feel like adulthood is equated with some elusive (and mostly materialistic) concept of "success". Where this causes anxiety is when I'm forced to mold myself to that framework while feeling deep, deep skepticism.

You might find these words attributed to Jose Marti more inspiring:

Un hombre, para ser completo, ha de plantar un árbol, tener un hijo y escribir un libro. - For a man to be complete, he has to plant a tree, have a child and write a book.

The first and the last are likely. If any child is born, it will be in the platonic sense. :)

I know the reason but it just slipped my mind while posting. Sorry.  :D
