It's certainly ear-catching. In addition to the wordless chorus, I just love the viola solo throughout the work. Now onto the Oboe Concerto. Another beautiful work.

SCHOENBERG:  Three Folksongs, op. 49    and 3 more...
Dreimal Tausend Jahre op. 50a   De Profundis, op.50b     Friede auf Erden op.13
(not to be confused with Frieda auf Erda which might be something Wagner wrote)
The Gregg Smith Singers      Gregg Smith cond.
A capella!      The LP comes with no texts making the works as mysterious as the tonality.

A hour ago this was delivered at my home, new acquisition and first listen.

QuoteIf you're looking how it is packed together, your jaw will drop. Ten discs in a flumsy and thin cardboard box, that will quickly deteriorate after getting the sleeves a few times in and out. No booklet, no info on the sleeve apart from the running time. The artwork on the covers by Sven Grot is grotesque. I so did not expect that from Archiv. For heaven's sake, why not ask a few euro's more and give us the original notes and technical info, surely this band and the listeners deserve more respect!  So thats off my chest.

That's sucks....    I totally agree with you - the trend to minimise presentation and packaging is going too far... I was planning on getting this set, but this does not make it an enticing prospect..  ::) I think Universal could need a few "hints" via email that this is not appreciated. Like you, I rather pay a little extra for a sturdy box and a booklet.

On yhe music. As far as I can judge from the Tafelmusik set I have, I think Telemann does very well with the edgy, astute way of playing by the Concerto Köln. Teleman can easily be overprettified and sound bland, but not under Goebel, who I think does a good job in showcasing the diversity in various musical styles that Telemann used and combined.

My brother, occasionally here under the name otare, got the box some days ago and remarked privately to me on the plain shitty packaging as well. I plainly expect better from a quality label like Archiv. Universal seems busy destroying many of their labels image as quality products deserving of a premium price.

Definitely not laid back music, and Alessandrini provides intense performances.

Michael Nyman: String Quartets 1 - 3. The Balanescu Quartet, on Argo. Strangely, the sequence on the disc is quartet 2, then, 3, then 1. Well, it was a perverse idea to start the disc with # 2. This has to be the shittiest piece of music I've heard in many a moon. Total skata, lemme tell you. Last on the disc is quartet 1, and it's at least listenable - although distinctly uninteresting.

I'm not a huge minimalist guy, but I do enjoy Nyman's Musique à Grande Vitesse. It isn't particularly interesting, but it is highly exciting. I've only heard the 3rd SQ, but I don't remember it well.

In addition to the music itself, this set includes some very interesting liner notes (written by Roeland Hazendonk) about things such as Beethoven's personality, his wardrobe and his total ineptitude as a dancer.  :)

And? Does it work?  ;) I may try the same... The "combining" of pieces can sometime be very effective...A couple of years ago I saw the Bamberg Symphony under Jonathat Nott doing Ives's The Unanswered Question followed attaca by Schubert's Unfinshed Symphony, and the effect was magical...
