Decca thinks so, too: it's the final work in this set.

Hate to tell you this, but the sound on the pictured (2008) set is leaps and bounds better still. In fact Foghorn Classics releases, almost all of them produced by Judith Sherman, are my benchmark for how a chamber music album should sound.

Oh yeah, and the ASQ is amazing  8)

Yes, believe that I was one of the discussants of the set shown above which is their second recording of these Beethoven SQs done in 2008 and performed on the Ellen M. Egger quartet of instruments he built in San Francisco in 1987 - below is a PDF file of several reviews, one of their earlier recording in the 90s and the other of the above Foghorn Classics production.  Also, Robert Greenberg from the Great Courses uses these second performances by the Alexander SQ in his lecture series on the Beethoven String Quartets.  Dave :)

  I should be happy to hear there is even better music out there that I haven't heard ::)  Funny I don't really feel that way :-[
  Still, it's good news.  I splurged on a pretty deluxe set of speakers, and it really does make a difference. However, I will not be buying a lot music for the next year or so. :D I'll see if I can hold out against upgrading this set.

  Thanks for the tip on Judith Sherman, Brian.  That is very good to know.

Whoops, forgot TD:

Giulini, LvB 2&8
It's all good...

Best Elgar 1 ever?  Nope.  Good enough that I will listen again this weekend?  You betcha!  (And just how did I end up with a half dozen Elgar 1s?)

The new erato

Boult's last take on Holst's Planets, and after that Howell's Concerto for String Orchestra;

A new acquisition. Listening to Orchestral Suite from "The Makropulos Case" (arr. Jose Serebrier). An exciting performance.

Third listen, and I like this even more!

Clear hints of Nystrøm, and even the occasional glance at Nielsen in some of the slower moments.

I already decided that I love the organ. :) I sampled this disc at an earlier ocassion, and decided to ho gave another Pachelbel set (Andrus Madsen, Raven Recordings)
Now I got this anyway as a bargain, my impression then is confirmed: nicely detailed and balanced, historically informed playing on a beautiful instrument.
Perhaps a bit on the "safe side", but a pleasure to listen to. No wow factor but "nice" - in a good way....

It's the second disc I bought from this organist. The first with music of Scheidemann I think, was a stunner, so I am glad this one seems to be right too :) It's in my listening queue.....
