Holmboe: the superb Symphony No.9

Probably the most difficult and complex of all the symphonies, but so very rewarding.
Every single post on the forum is unnecessary. Including the ones that are interesting or useful.

It was a Bach Organ week for me. I have been listening to the the second set of Stockmeiers interpretation, with 10 cd's. Not a total success I am afraid.

On TV, Menachem Pressler playing Schubert's Piano sonata in B-flat major D. 960, from a recital in the Cité de la Musique in 2011. Quite wonderful!  :)

kishnevi

Still manages to be first rate even with the usual hiccups of historical live recordings (La Scala 1961 in this case)

Must have been quite a night in person...

#63089
Weber Oberon Overture and Der Freischütz Overture, Goodman conducting the Hanover Band

Martin Rost plays outstanding music on an outstanding organ and he is recorded outstandingly. Superlatives are required for this superlative disc.

Earlier today, some Debussy from this set:

Regrettably, after several tries,  I still find very little to admire in Mme. Haas's performances of Debussy. It all sounds to me like a pedal and rubato infused haze. This approach is particularly harmful IMHO to the pieces from around the turn of the century (Suite bergamasque, Pour le piano), which instead of forward-looking, almost sound like salon music from an earlier generation (I couldn't help thinking of Massenet time and again  ??? ). The Images fare slightly better, but still I find them rather undistinguished. All in all, the exact opposite of the kind of Debussy playing I favor. >:(

I own vol.3 & 4. Both are indeed outstanding. Vol. 1 & 2 are on my wishlist.

Luckily when I bought the complete MDG catalogue, I managed to get also all the organ works recorded on this label. Time for me to relisten all those CD'S.

Well, his style is a bit oldfashioned. but still well considered, I think, and I particularly like its consistent unpretentiousness.
Music of this quality does not always need seasoning.

And the Kreienbrink organs are fine with me, some of them I even find rather charming.

Harry - love my MDG CDs - just curious, what is your 'rough' approximation of the number of items and the total number of CDs in that catalog?  Dave :)
