Now, No.6 from Segerstam and Company...

[asin]B000CQNVSU[/asin]

Autumn Leaves

Now playing:

Listening to various works from this box-set:

Visions De L'Amen
Des Canyons Aux Etoiles
Quatour Pour La Fin Du Temps

Find Messiaens music quite fascinating - I cant get into his more abstract compositions but theres plenty of his more accessible music in this box.

Now:

Listening to this whole compilation. It's that good.

It sure is. I wish some enterprising label would release some kind of Chavez anthology like this one. After all, Chavez was just as important to the Mexican classical scene as Revueltas was.

Kontrapunctus

Slower than most, but very passionate and dramatic.

It seems that even the adventurous labels would rather record every mediocrity who ever lived on the European continent or British Isles before touching anything from the Americas.

Milhaud's The Dreams Of Jacob - Gareth Hulse, cond.

It seems Milhaud was genetically disposed to exude melodies, in polyphonic polytonal layers, but line, line, line all the time.

Thank you for this. I was completely unaware of it. Really nice.

I think this was the first time I'd heard it, and I too was pleasantly surprised. Latest upload (4 hours ago) to the always interesting and educational Wellesz channels:

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Rota and Respighi quartets from this disc:

[asin]B0000265BV[/asin]

Undemanding stuff but I'm pretty happy so far. GBP 17 on amazon uk, 3 Euros on jpc.....
From the recently arrived bunch of jpc purchases.

Edit: The Malipiero 3rg is by far the most interesting quartet on this disc. A complete cycle would be nice it seems.

Finishing this delightful CD with music by Telemann and Handel....

Mandryka

Nørgård's 2nd sonata, last night I noticed that the composer recommends that you turn up the volume so that's what I'm doing. I still find it one of the most challenging things I've heard, much of it sounds like bluster to me, pointless bluster. And unredeemed by much harmonic, melodic or formal things of interest. Maybe I'm missing something, if you know what please say.
