Listening to a work Stravinsky thought very highly of, that I haven't heard for ages.

;)

After a waaaay too long gap in time, one of Naxos' most awesome series has returned for a new edition!!!

Of the 9 pieces here, 7 were commissioned by the guitarist - as was the cover painting. He worked closely with many of the composers and has even become friends with several. As with Vol. 1, the diversity and quality of these works is extraordinary.

Anton García Abril (b. 1933) is one of the biggest names here, and his piece is also the only non-premiered-by-Levin piece - but fear not, apparently the guitarist has commissioned a new work for a future volume in this series, which he calls a "a lush impressionistic masterpiece." Can't wait.

If you like contemporary music and/or guitars, buy buy buy this series.

I am continuing to play through the Mozart Philips Complete Edition. The variations and Rondos were wonderful! I have now moved to Vol, 20 featuring Kegel and Davis conducting the Litanies and Verspers, works unknown to me.

The Mozart Philips Complete Works Edition (45 volumes) is proving to be the GREATEST purchase I have ever made.  The recordings are of such high standards. A lot  of ASMF with Sir Neville Marriner, Uchida plays on many of the solo piano pieces and the sound quality across the board is simply superb! To have booklets, with beautiful artwork and translated libretti has added more to the enjoyment.

You have chosen well  0:)

This is really a good recording: Anja Silja pulls off the sprechstimme better than anyone I can remember.  Also, Craft creates a transparent texture that shows off Schoenberg's polyphony to great advantage.

First rate!

:)

In 2018, this quartet, if all works out, shall help release the first recording of all of Schulhoff's works for String Quartet
as well as the complete quartets of another 20th Century Would-Be giant... Very promising band, taught, among
others by Friedemann Weigle (RIP) of the Petersen and Artemis Quartets.

First listen:

Zero points for correctly guessing which older, more famous Germanic composer Gal's Clarinet Quintet is shamelessly copied from! I mean, it's good, and I like it. But the reason it's good and I like it is because it's basically deleted scenes from a much better quintet I like even more.

I hope our Jeffrey likes this as well as I do.  (I know that the Erwartung and Pierrot Lunaire from this set have not [yet] won him over . . . .)
