Uh, could you not remind me of that?  :-[  ::)

Ok. Won't mention the Richafort either.

Marcello: 6 Concerti for Oboe, Nos. 4-6 played by Heinz Holliger/Camerata Bern....

Delightful, charming music that is well played.

My only quibble is that it does not include his most famous work, the Requiem: Officium Defunctorum for 6 voices, 1605

Can there be anyone so benighted as not to own several recordings of that already?

Yeah, that quote was in regards to a 1950s recording by the Philharmonia, back when Sibelius recordings (and perhaps performances of his music outside Finland) were thin on the ground. It was a good PR move on Sibelius's part since Karajan was an up-and-coming talent who showed much interest in the music.

In that proper context it doesn't appear to be an attempt to deify Karajan's recordings across the board. Certainly since that time the world has caught up to Karajan, at the very least.

My favourite interpretation of Sibelius 2 is my copy this old vinyl....

....a superb, powerful, menacing and almost threatening performance.

It is a good-natured habit.

I believe Shostakovich was similarly inclined to praise every performance he heard. Makes me like him...even though that makes arguing on the internet about the best performance of anything by him more difficult  ;D

Quite so. He said that to Walter Legge, who had been trying to get Sibelius himself to come to England to record. Sibelius pled old age.
I like Conor71's "I  like old Music" signature.

Is that release as wonderful as it looks?

I think so, yes. The other two recordings I've got are strong, and this at the very least stands along side them and warrants owning an additional recording.

Evening Sarge, not quite yet, just rediscovering (some forgotten) entries in my collection one tidbit at a time ;)

Re Wagner, I did enjoy the first Bernstein CD I listened to earlier this week, particularly the overture of Fliegende Holländer and the Rienzi overture. The second CD should be listened to by the week-end as well as some of your recs on the Solti box.

Incidentally, I am looking at some Wagner books about the Ring for me to approach it with a bit more info beforehand.  8)
