One of the highlights of the set for me.

Certainly, it's quite a gem.

If I'm not going to sleep, I might as well listen to Schubert instead.

D.958 in C minor. Which apparently I last listened to in full in November 2009...

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Haydn: Creation, Part I [Spering]....

This disc is something of a treasure and a great rarity.

The first part is of a concert in New York Town Hall in 1948 when she would have been 60, though the voice still sounds unbelievably fresh, firm and completely free of vibrato.

It is principally valuable for her performance of Britten's Les Illuminations, though only with piano accompaniment. It is a great pity she never recorded the piece with orchestra. Also part of the concert are excerpts from Debussy's Pelleas et Melisande, in which she sings all the roles (including Golaud). They are no doubt a curiosity, but do grant us a direct leak to the composer, as Teyte studies the role of Melisande with Debussy in Paris.

Also on the disc are some excerpts from Strauss's Salome with George Reeves at the piano, never intended to be issued, but made when Teyte was studying the role for performances at Covent Garden, which unfortunately never came to fruition. Teyte's silvery, girlish tone, but powerful, individual lower register, might have just been the voice of Strauss's imaginings. What a shame she never actually sang the role on stage.

This is pretty damn good by the way. Sort of like the Pacifica Quartet, but without the extra works by random other composers. Also in better sound, I think.

Piano Concerto in A major [Nicholson]....

I find the music on this CD to be elegant and well played with poise. The music flows effortlessly.

Thank you for posting that photo of St. Sibelius, it's one I'd not seen!

The Dies Natalis is about as wonderful, as moving as one could possibly wish.
