I must admit to not having heard any of those other than Blomstedt  :-[
My own particular favourite version of those that I have is probably that by Kondrashin.

Oh man, you've got to hear Bernstein in the 5th. Also, Bernstein's Espansiva (w/ the Royal Danish Orch.) is mandatory listening for the Nielsenite.

One of my favorite Hovhaness recordings.  Nice to revisit this!

Exceptional Telarc sonics.  :)

Tocatta&Fugue - are you familiar with this release?

The performance of this Netherlands based group is as small, intimate, restrained and sober yet expresive as they come.

Andrew Marriner in a lovely performance of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto under Jane Glover.

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Another bargain basement CD.

This time it's superb performances of Mozart's 21st and 24th Piano Concertos played by Howard Shelley with the City of London Sinfonia, easily as good as some of the more expensive options.

Symphony No.2, for the second time today.

I think this set has firmly planted Brahms as one of my personal great composers.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

CD 7 of this set, of which I relisten to the first four composers.

Do you know if Gio is still writing reviews on amazon?  This may be the latest one I've read - and it's from 2014.

Fantastic disc. The eighth is a knockout.

It is! Prokofiev 8th is Gavrilov's favorite piano piece.

Maybe four or five years ago he played here in Belgrade with the Philharmonic (Ravel's Left Hand superbly, Prokofiev's 1st waywardly) and we got in brief conversation after the concert. I asked him was there any chance for a solo recital, he said of course if gets organized and asked me what program do I think he should play. I said Bach, Handel and Scriabin and he replied that's all ok but it would have to include Prokofiev 8th which is in his mind the greatest and the most profound piece ever written for piano, and he went at quite some length about it. After that he played couple of times more with Belgrade Philharmonic but the solo recital never materialized for some reason.

Funnily enough, the latest is from Wednesday - but it's not music, and he's reviewed very little since autumn '15. That Capella Pratensis disc - and their Josquin Ave maris stella - are definitely on my list.

Thanks, Drasko. Weird piece. Lesta...fast it is, also rather "angry". Never heard of Bruci. Will investigate. (I had several LP's from that Philips series. )

One of the best CD'S in this set.

I have to say, that your comments about the volumes of this 10 CD set put into words exactly what I think. Parallel thinking??
Reality trumps our fantasy far beyond imagination.

Well you could probably word it in a better way, but yes if you agree, that must be parallel thinking :)
