Symphony No.3, 'Sinfonia Espansiva'

Effectively the start of a "second round" of getting to know the Nielsen symphonies.

And the Espansiva is certainly not a bad place to start. Happy listening! 8)

Recent listening:

Piano Trio In G Minor - Andreas Brantelid/Marianna Shirinyan/Vilde Frang
Introduction, Theme & Variations In D - Benjamin Grosvenor/Anna Tilbrook
Funeral March In C Minor (2 Versions) - Benjamin Grosvenor

Listening to the last Disc (#16) in this recently arrived box set - all of these pieces are new to me.
Had a chance to listen to various other works (Piano Concertos & Sonatas, Mazurkas, Music For Orchestra & Piano, Etc.) already and I am pleased so far...
Edit: Forgot to list the performers - added them in.

Exploring some of the Cage's number pieces while on a short holiday in my house in the Alps.

Yesterday I listened to Eight-Two-One4:

I didn't get Eight at all. Honestly I found it quite boring. The two "miniatures" (if compared to Eight) Two and One4 were stunningly beautiful instead.

Later today I will listen again to Eight. Maybe I wasn't in the right mood.

I though I didn't want to hear The Planets again, particularly with video, but I`m glad I changed my mind and heard it live tonight.  Splendid performance by Tovey and the Vancouver Symphony tonight.    The screen changed the acoustic of the room for the better, sound was very clear and yet full.
And the Walton Viola Concerto with James Ehnes too, his first public performance of it in preparation for a recording session in London as part of a Walton series on Chandos. - terrific.  I think it was the first Vancouver hearing too.

Orchestral Suite #4
Concerto For 2 Violins, "Double" - Soloists: Henryk Szeryng & Maurice Hasson

Don't listen to JSB's Orchestral Music all that much but it's great for sure - got to love the Largo of the Double Concerto For 2 Violins.

Toccata & Fugue In F, BWV 540
Toccata & Fugue In D Minor, BWV 538, "Dorian"

Just bought the box of Richter's instrumental Bach recordings (+ the Mass in B Minor) which includes the above recordings (so a duplication of sorts) but theres other Organ music in the box which is not part of the 3 CD set pictured..
Anyway, really dig these :D

A very inspired disc. CD 2 of this set gets a top recommendation by me.

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Much looking forward to hearing those recordings!!! Loved that cycle so far... even if it could use the occasional addition of grain or grit in the early works.
