Very disappointing sound quality. The opening soundes so flat, quenched and dull that I had to check my speakers to see if there was something wrong.

Yes, that happens far more with Russian based recordings, as I would like to know. Its going off my list then, I trust your speakers, and my Avalons will certainly dislike this too.
I've always had great respect for Paddington because he is amusingly English and a eccentric bear He is a great British institution and emits great wisdom with every growl. Of course I have Paddington at home, he is a member of the family, sure he is from the moment he was born. We have adopted him.

A little crazy, it may seem, that this is the first I ever listened to this piece, but I think it highly likely.

a pair of discs from Hyperion's 'please buy me' site that arrived this morning
a collection of Victorian voluntaries and concert pieces based on hymns, chorales and psalm tunes
starting with an arrangement of MENDELSSOHN's Overture to St. Paul  and continuing with a batch of names new to me  SILAS, MacFARREN, KING, SPARK, STEGGAL and PEARCE
Graham Barber at the John Milton organ of Tewkesbury Abbey  (2002 recording, organ rebuilt in 1997)
and Violin Concertos by LIDARTI (1730-1793)
Francesco d'Orazio, violin     Auser Musici

Oh, what is it like? Abbado and Pollini were usually a glorious combination!

I hadn't listened to this for many, many years...of course, with this pianist, conductor and orchestra, you wouldn't expect anything short of an excellent performance...and yet, I got the impression that the success is Pollini's (whose playing I found impeccable) rather than Abbado's (who seems not to be able to keep his cool in some passages). Not that this concerto must be arid (in the Brendel / Kubelik fashion--also on DG), but this perhaps was overly "emotional"..no, "emotional" is not the right word, "excessive" perhaps? But these are very subjective impressions of mine, so do take them with a pinch of salt ;)

Mandryka

Leon Berben plays BWV 681. In the prelude he plays it like it's like a stylus fantasticus toccata: fast moving, improvisatory sounding, like constantly bringing in random new ideas, episodic. Fugue is pretty virtuosic too.

Maria Yudina plays BWV 681. Bipolar prelude, moves unexpectedly from manic to depressed, from extrovert to introvert. The fugue is just manic. The prelude is the most fun Bach I can remember hearing from her.

I seem to have forgoten about this one for a while (Alnaes symphonies 1 and 2), but it's quite fun. It's melodies aren't as memorable as some, but it makes up for that with energy and enthusiasm. The recording and playing are excellent. Beautiful cover too...
