Beethoven - Piano Sonatas
Annie Fischer, piano

[asin]B00005UOMP[/asin]
CD1: Sonatas 12, 6, 31, & 13

After so many years, I thought tonight is no less appropriate than any other to begin a new listen of Annie.

The new erato

I am listening to symphonies from this set:

This is pretty inconsequential, and occasionally pretty mediocre, music but with a healthy and charming dose of "joie de vivre". Milhaud had a great talent which would have been put to better use with a little more self restraint.

Are you calling Hoggy Haydn boring Sarge??

Not at all. I was just referencing Harry's odd--odd to me--reaction to "Hoggy."

Some disappointing music by Arnell/Yates. Sometimes one has to come to the conclusion that a work unfinished should stay unfinished.

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Quite nicely put, The new erato  :), albeit perhaps a bit harsh with the term "mediocre". But I understand and to a certain extent share what you're saying,

There's some composers that one tends to admire more than to love or even like (in my case, Ligeti comes to mind, as does occasionally Bartok  :-[ ). Then, there's those one tends to like more than admire...Milhaud would fall, for me, in this latter category.

Tangentially, I've been watching a rather interesting series of TV programs on music made by Luciano Berio for Italy's RAI in the early 70's (I mentioned this series some time ago in the "Purchases Today" thread); Berio interviews almost everyone who was anyone in (modern) music at the time, and rather surprisingly, allots more than average attention to the elderly Milhaud, showing the utmost respect and love for his oeuvre...

You must be kidding, right? Self-restraint from a man who wrote over 400 opus-numbered works?  ;D
