This music oftenly gets dismissed as mere entertainment for the ruling class --- I say: if only our ruling class had the same idea about entertainment as Prince Eszterhazy Miklos, the world would be a better place for composers, performers and music lovers alike.

People who dismiss art on those grounds don't deserve attention. What next? Die Kunst der Fuge mere entertainment for the Lutheran God?  ::)

Disc 4 from this utterly charming 5-CD box which no Haydnista should be without.

More and better "mere entertainment," says I!

The new erato

All art is entertaining (in the many senses of the concept) to somebody (in rare cases only to the artist) somewhere, or it wouldn't be produced.

There's worse : I had a girlfriend who told me straight out (needless to say we didn't last long) that anyone who claims to enjoy classical music doesn't really...it's all just social pretension.

Edit:  By the way, aren't you impressed I'm listening to Bloch right now?   :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: :laugh:

Ah yes, inverted snobbery... I don´t know which one is worse, actually: at least a snob has the chance, by repeated exposition , to eventually become a real music lover, and at the very least her/his buying tickets and subscriptions helps orchestras and performers, while an inverted snob has no chance to overcome her/his sad condition, unless the significant other is veeeery patient and forgiving --- which was not your case, and neither would have been mine.  :D

Of course. And in general I´d take art (and music especially) that is specifically meant to entertain any day and night over art that is specifically meant not to entertain.   ;D

Some choir music from the 17th century composed by an unknown German composer. Not music of real consequence, but nice enough to listen at.

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Some days are better as others, but I will cope. Thank you for asking Andrei.

Thank you Karl, as I said I will cope, but listening to music suffers a little at certain days.

I really like Johann Sebastian Bloch, pretty famous isn't he?, and as you know I only associate with the famous and foremost.  I'm that kinda guy. Now to further my stock of social esteem, I'm gonna have to buy some more classical CDs this weekend! 8)
