I have avoided Stravinsky a bit over the years I've been listening to the classical music of the 20th century - I'm not sure quite why. I've been impressed by this disc of three neo-classical works recently.

For me, still one of the best Planets around.

Have you heard Levine's "Mars" or "Saturn" with the CSO?- the brass is positively 'Valhallan.'

Its definitely my battle standard.

And Boult's Serenade to Music on that disc is 'gaw-geous.'

And Peter Power Pop's choices aren't my choices. I mean Dutoit's his No. 1 Planets and I have to say that performance didn't leave a last impression on me other than it was technically precise.

The opening of this work is my favourite opening in any symphony. It is as though Brahms was boldly announcing an end to his years of procrastination and finally delivering his first symphony saying "There, I have finally done it. Here it is!" It was certainly worth the wait. I do love its fourth movement especially that haunting horn episode.

  Yes, I agree with you.  He doesn't sound like Gulda at all, but it reminds me of Gulda's LvB in that he seems to downplay his own virtuosity so that the focus is always on the music.  Stunning tone and lyricism.

Supreme 'in what way'?- certainly not on the battlefield.

The Levine blows away any other performance of the Planets in terms of power and majesty: in reading, in orchestral response, and in engineered sound.

I've heard all of those Planets (I'm surprised I don't see the DG Karajan/BPO and the Dutoit on your list ).

I like the Levine/CSO the best since it has the most heroic and animated reading- but I really love the DG Karajan/BPO and the Herrmann/LSO for the "Neptune" cut- but for totally different reasons: the Karajan just takes me to the realm of Olympus and the Herrmann is like a great science fiction film score.
