Small cover alert !  :o

I'm glad I could finally get hold of that disc (for 5$ at the used record store). According to some the performance of the symphony is clearly superior to its CPO counterpart. This is one of the few Pettersson symphonies I did not have yet.
You have a player that small?

Just bought some Medtner:

Pulled the trigger on this today:

"Music can inspire love, religious ecstasy, cathartic release, social bonding, and a glimpse of another dimension. A sense that there is another time, another space and another, better universe."

Just bought:

I'd be interested to know how you find these two. They've passed under my gaze recently. There don't seem to be all that many options for Shostakovich's songs, and then some of them have silly issues like not having translations of the texts or deciding that some other language is preferable to Russian.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

I will let you know. I had already heard several of these songs through the Rozhdestvensky set I purchased (not too long ago) and that interested me even further to explore some other performances.

Edit: These recordings may be quite difficult for you to track down for good prices. They're both out-of-print. I do think, however, you can buy them through someone like Arkivmusic or Prestoclassical who does the whole 'manufactured-on-demand' thing.

A few Chopin LPs today:

Sofronitsky playing various Etudes, Mazurkas and 1st Scherzo, studio recordings 1947-53 on Akkord (Soviet pre Melodiya label)
Dezso Ranki Four Scherzos on Hungaroton
Pogorelich Piano Sonata No.2 plus various pieces on DG/PGP RTB (ex-Yugoslavian DG licence)

No need for that, if you get this

It would seem they are the first two CDs of the set.  CD3 is songs with piano, CDs 4 and 5 are the Chung Bastille recording of Lady Macbeth

Edit: my copy is somewhere or other and I don't remember if texts were included.  the Haitink set of symphonies contains a couple of the song cycles as fillers (conducted, obviously, by Haitink).

Just bought a CD of new music by local composer and cellist Caerwen Martin. Featuring compositions 'The Beauty of Now' for violin and piano, 'I Sleep Alone' for soprano and string quartet and 'One For Sorrow' (originally for an animated film) performed by the composer. I don't know if it is available just yet to purchase/download but I think it will be soon. Her music incorporates quite a lot of indeterminacy, improvisation and a very colourful use of extended string techniques.

Well sure, but look at the prices for that set. It seems to be OOP.

Russian songs are best performed by russian performers: prononciation, spirit, it really makes a difference.  And they are avaliable at modest prices.

To start with you have the cycles for basses:

I checked some of the other CD of Shosta song cycles and they seem to be OOP also.  I dont understand.  I bought most of them in the past year.

Yes, but (and I can't believe it's me of all people saying this), those are not orchestral versions.

There is a series of 5 Delos discs that have piano versions of (I think) all the songs, and then there's the one you mentioned. But in many cases Shostakovich created the piano and orchestral versions more or less simultaneously.

It seems relatively rare for there to be recordings that are dedicated to this part of Shostakovich's output. Some of them manage to appear as filler with symphonies.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

That's correct. Just in time for the very end of his centenary year. (Very late to the party, I know.) Prior to this, I only had the Tortelier recording of the symphonies.
