I've never heard VC1 or the Rhapsody, the other two works on that CD, so it was still worth getting.

Excellent and, who knows, you may come to enjoy the VC2 the more time you spend with it. :)

Wiren Violin Concerto/Triptych/Wind Quintet/String Quartet....

Excellent! The Wiren Violin Concerto is a great work.

I have not heard it yet but look forward to doing so  :)

André

I have but a single disc of Wiren's music. I have looked long and hard for a companion or two but have trouble deciding. This might be a good candidate !

I went for this one because of the Violin Concerto [obviously] but also for the mix of orchestral and chamber music on it.

That's exactly what I like about it !

Martinu: Cello Concertos....

I guess I got it mixed up with a different Beauty Farm recording.  It was this one, that got the bad review. Johannes Ockeghem: Masses

A few people took him to task over that review, myself included, and he retreated, I have no idea if he's revised his opinion, anyway you can hear the music for yourself easily enough. I like very much their way with the harmonies.

Mandryka writes, "Ah, I'm glad you haven't disappeared, I was thinking about our Josquin motets project just yesterday!

Pasotti/ La Fonte Musica has another one which I also enjoyed, called Le Ray au Soleyl."

I'm game to continue our Josquin listening project here.  Though I don't know if I can start a thread on GMG yet, being a "Newbie"?  Any sign of Rick?

I'll look into Le Ray au Soleyl, thanks.

I didn't care for Beauty Farm's CD of Ockeghem Masses either.  Though friends tell me the two Gombert discs are a different story.  For fans of the Franco-Flemish polyphony, the Bauldeweyn (or Balduin or Bauldwijn) Masses are an essential purchase, regardless, as some works by Bauldeweyn have been misattributed to Josquin, so he must be a very fine composer.  & I don't recall that his music has ever been recorded before.

Todd McComb recently discussed Beauty Farm's latest CD in his "Remarks on Recent Recordings" section at Medieval.org:

http://www.medieval.org/emfaq/cds/remarks.html

King ubu—I'm glad to hear you enjoyed those two CDs.  Bilson's long been a favorite of mine in Mozart's Piano Sonatas.

Rick is at Talk Classical,

It was interesting to read McCrumb's comments about Phantasm's Tye, has anyone here heard it?

I bought it (were you asking about the recent Hyperion Tye/Phatasm?), but only listened to it once.  My initial reaction was positive.

I was surprised with his negative comments.  But Beauty Farm does exaggerate cross relations and sometimes can overdo the (debatable) opportunities for dissonance in this repertory.

Just browsing through Todd McCrumb's notes on the Beauty Farm Ockeghe (here http://www.medieval.org/emfaq/cds/remarks.html) , I noticed he likes Schola Discantus's recording of Missa Quinti Toni. And yes I can see it's coherent and luminous, but it's harmonically so much blander than what BF do. It's good we have both ways of interpreting the score.

I shall buy Phantasm's Tye I'm sure.

I just noticed though other posts here that it's thanksgiving. It's a non-event in the UK as you can imagine. Anyway - happy thanksgiving!

Pretty much a non event at our home, too.  But this year even more so since I had oral surgery Tuesday which has made eating less enjoyable.  But thanks, anyway.

Although I am not into table pounding (at all), Martinu cello concerti are lovely and this is a fine performance.

Pulled the trigger on (mostly) OOP CDs of (mostly) off-the-beaten-track repertoire I've been monitoring for awhile. The prices were right  :)...
