Cage for the most part seems like a composer that actually best suits box sets, I'm not sure what Cageians think but when dealing with single release CDs, his catalogue can be hard to sort through. I don't know if it's just me or not.

The number pieces (being ironically the easiest to sort through  ) seem to be in that category with recording "versions".
Though the indeterminate and "silence" era works of his are quite easy for me to sort through.  :-\

I know next to nothing about Cage's oeuvre or his discography. I just thought I want to get my feet wet in the Cageian waters and these box sets seemed like a good way to do it. I do have The Seasons ECM recording (w/ Dennis Russell Davies conducting) that I'm going to try and spin tonight.

Indeed, Jeffrey. :)

The Seasons is a beautiful work, I love that one. I'm not a Cageian, I love many of his works though. Especially regular piano, prepared piano, number pieces, stuff like Water Walk and electroacoustic pieces too. See some of my favorites in the favorite Cage works thread for more of my recommendations?  :D

Cool, I'll have to go through the Cage thread at some point. Too tired tonight though. ;)

Thanks for the heads-up for that one, which I'll be very interested to get as - heresy alert - I don't much enjoy the Rooley set.

The number pieces are certainly beautiful works. The ones for much larger forces aren't on any of these but might be worth checking out once you realise how utterly gorgeous this music is ;)

I've found the Taneyev series somewhat uneven, but liked vol 4 very much.

Found this in a second hand bookshop today, a signed copy of Sculthorpe's autobiography!

That looks amazing GioCar! A lot of recordings I haven't heard here......The very last one looks intriguing! What is it like?
Hi Jessop, you mean the Gervasoni? I still have to listen to it but I'm developing a growing interest towards Gervasoni. I consider him an excellent craftsman in the highest sense of the word. Among the living composers, he's closer to Kurtág than anybody else imo.
That album contains one of his most recent works: the Prés cycle - 18 little morceaux/preludes for piano, a sort of Kinderszenen (?) for the 21st century. Very intriguing. I'm looking forwards to listening to it, but my backlog is quite large in this period... ;) and I'm heading to Moscow (with Mrs GioCar) for the New Year celebrations  :) , so I won't have time to listen to it till the beginning of January  :(

So since I have only one performance of BWV 1079, I tried to get Sonnerie which everyone say is so great. No chance. I like Ricercar Consort so I bought that one instead. Tried Amazon.fr where is would have been 11.76 € shipped, but the seller does not deliver to Finland. I even changed my credit card area to Europe to test if my card works in Amazon.fr, but it was useless because the seller does not sell to Finland. On Amazon.co.uk the cheapest seller does not sell to Finland either (so annoying!) So, I took what I can. £12.40 delivered, about 15 euros. Why is this so difficult?
Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

If it's of any help, when I've encountered an amazon MP seller (usually on the German site) who will not deliver to Spain, I write them an e-mail (through the "contact vendor" facility on amazon itself) and then they'll often enable the "international delivery" option and I can then order... You might give that a try.

I'm not sure if this would be a major breakthrough for me since I do own a few John Cage recordings already in my collection. ;) I even own Xenakis, Nono, Boulez, Berio, Maderna, Murail, Carter, Feldman, Grisey, among others in my collection, so not really a 'major breakthrough'. :)

Oh, that's a cool suggestion! So maybe these sellers are not evil, they just forget to enable international delivery?

Thanks for the hint!  0:)

Ah ok. Thanks for your thoughts; this disc must be very interesting and I will check out some Gervasoni sooner or later. :)
