Indeed. I'll try to take some photos of the both hardback books for you and everyone else to see.

Excellent!
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

I too look forward to seeing these photos. I have the set in another version and the performances are wonderful. You should enjoy that set  :)

Thanks, I've heard the Kertesz symphony performances before in an older issued set, but it belonged to my dad. I certainly have a fond recollection of the performances being excellent. :)

Adrian Chandler, who founded the period-instrument ensemble La Serenissima 21 years ago, has produced a dozen enlightening, acclaimed, and award-winning albums for AVIE. After many years of anticipation, he turns his attention to the touchstone of Vivaldi s concerto output, The Four Seasons. As one has come to expect, he brings something unique to an interpretation brimming with vitality and originality. Putting this most popular of classical works into context, Chandler rounds out the recording with Vivaldi concertos for bassoon, including the famous La Notte, and world premiere recordings of two concertos for the violin in tromba marina, a hitherto obsolete instrument that was used during Vivaldi s lifetime.

Part of an ancient tradition of setting the text of the Lamentations of Jeremiah to music, François Couperin s Lessons of Darkness are certainly one of his most famous works, and the pinnacle of Baroque vocal music. Written in 1714, probably for the Abbey of Longchamp, they represent the culminating point of the French Tenebrae Lessons tradition and are considered the masterpiece of the genre.
Wise words from Que:

Never waste a good reason for a purchase....  ;)

My Monteverdi box arrived a week ago, first disc had a visible production error that made it skip during one track ... shot a mail to Ricercar and they in turn told me to get in touch first with their Swiss distributor - which dangerously enough turns out to be just a 20 minute walk from where I live, and is selling to private customers now that there are hardly any CD stores left ... got a replacement for the faulty disc and bought the new alpha Monteverdi release by Alarcón ("I 7 Peccati Capitali") too, for their pretty attractive price. Dangerous, will try and not go there all too often, but wow, a cellar with the full catalogues by alpha, Ricercar, Hyperion, Arcana etc. etc. etc. - what a temptation!

Some other recent acquisitions/arrivals (CD-R alert on the Perlemutters, as was to be expected):

More Adorno on music:

This is where Adorno quotes the quip on Pli selon pli ("L'après-midi d'un vibraphone:D) but, from the excerpt I read, he actually (kind of?) praises Boulez's composition ("the resentment of the orchestral musician takes refuge in word play" - "all this conceals the hommage to Mallarmé, the sweetness of tone à la Debussy, the predilection for the instrument, the long running time and, above all, that technology has banished the neoromantic and vitalist faun of 1890").

Nowadays, when I read the odd snippet of Adorno, I think of . . . Wicker Island:

Good day, Karl!

Spot on...and yet, there is a strange fascination emanating from  (some of) old Teddie's writings  ;)....

That was, alas, a real let-down, despite the stellar cast. Cheap enough to not have made me sad and just sufficient to get to know the work a little, but ultimately not satisfactory. At all, really. Which leaves the oop EMI recording the only one out there, I think. I hope that wonderful opera will be taken and and recorded by an enterprising opera house within the next five seasons or so.

Hm, okay ... based my acquisition on Martinon and the cast indeed (cost me exactly € 3.08, so not too bad). The Plasson is around, but I've not come around to really explore much of Roussel's music in-depth. Also stumbled over your review of a more recent recording of "Ariane" by chance a couple of hours ago, where you mention the Aubin in passing. Guess with this kind of repertoire, alas, usually one doesn't have that much of a choice.

After the post above, went to check the mailbox, and this one was in it:

Just bought:

I purchased both of these very cheaply. Boult's 1979 Planets remains my benchmark performance.

Amazon MP still offers new copies of the EMI recording at fairly cheap prices.
