I haven't been buying much in the past couple of years. And normally refrain from buying big boxes. But the deal was good and the hole in my collection quite large, and yesterday it arrived. It's the most amazing box I've ever seen!

[asin]B07D2Y539K[/asin]

A lot of care has gone into this box! And by the way, it is now back to its normal price at Amazon UK. The outer box was huge. And it is HEAVY!  After opening that, it comes in a VERY solid (and thick) cardboard box that protects it. When you open that, it has the foam protectors around it just like stereo or home entertainment equipment! I mean, if the outer box gets damaged (which would take quite some force), the foam would likely protect it! Amazing! The protection around the box is well thought out. I've never had so much fun opening a set of discs!!

The box of discs is also Incredibly solid. Once through all of that, the discs are split in half by the three books of his life, his works, and a listing of all the works in the box (listed by groupings with BWV and date). Each grouping within the box comes with a smaller booklet that lists all of the discs and works on those discs in that section. You can download those at the Bach 333 website. I see many months of enjoyment ahead!

It's actually taking me YEARS to go through the sacred cantatas... but I'm slow.

I'm probably not in the market for such a big box but it does look very nicely presented. Which is really what you want in such a major project. Good to hear.

Superb Neal, I almost envy you the event of unpacking. Have fun, and keep us posted what you find of the content.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

If I sit on Bach, will the spirit of his music seep into me through my.... >:D........bones?!?! :)

It will be an adventure, that is for sure, especially since I've not heard about 70-75% of the music (my estimate). Ever.

Harry - I will try to post, but I am trying to rip it first, so I may post only a few initial impressions at first. I hope I can rip it all by the end of May.

Wow! There are 222 CDs? I have two complete Bach Editions (Hanssler and Teldec) which are about 140 CDs, so there must be lots of alternate versions. I started in on the Hanssler edition years ago with the Cantatas and have barely started.

There are roughly 52 discs of alternatives (that I can easily identify), although 12 of those are piano, so arguable how to categorize those. After that, there are about 22 discs of: music books (6 discs), Bach influences from Pachelbel to Pergolesi (8 discs) and Bach as inspiration to others (8 discs). The last one is transcriptions/transformations. So that gets you down to about 148.

Some historic recordings of music by Edgar Varèse, including the first CD release of the survey of the composer's music that Robert Craft made for Columbia, plus Hermann Scherchen conducting the world premiere of Déserts, and Ionisation under its creator Nicholas Slonimsky.

The cover says "Volume I", but these are actually 3 CDs, and I don't see what they'd be able to include in a "Volume II" (even if Amériques is conspicuously absent from this collection).

I'm fairly sure all of that is in this box.

It is, and in the same performances, but I'm not interested in duplicating the Requiem and Stabat Mater. Also, the absence of texts and translations in about a third of the other works (sung in czech) is a problem.

The texts and translations are present. I know some reviews claim they are not, but they are quite definitely there in my copy, as a PDF.

I might add that most of that box consists of liturgical music using well known texts, such as the Stabat Mater, and settings of various psalms in Czech.  The synopses of the two major nonliturgical works, St Ludmila and Spectre's Bride, are detailed enough...and Dvorak's setting of the words is expert enough...that not having a text in front of me did not impede my ability to figure out what was going on through much of those works. The PDF Madiel refers to is on the last CD.

Unfortunately I only use a tablet, not a computer, so these extra discs included in lieu of librettos by record companies are useless to me.

That is a great shame. I wasn't too concerned about duplicating the Requiem and Stabat Mater, I was more interested in the other works and the box was good value. I downloaded the pdf onto my PC then transferred it to my tablet for ease of reading while listening. Obviously, this isn't an option for you.

You need a computer and a printer exactly once.

That's exactly how many times I put the disc in a computer. And hey presto, I have a hard copy which I folded up and put in the box.
