Very interesting, thanks Dave ! I happen to agree with most of his comments, negative or laudatory. The only cycles I don't know are the Rostropovich and the Jurowski. I am a bit less enthusiastic than he is about the Karajan and Muti sets, but that's all right. I'm delighted he singles out Abravanel's Manfred for praise. A performance that sings ! My all-time fav cycle remains the Haitink, which scores a 9/10 or 10/10 in my book for all 7 works.

Markevitch fan here. Never understood the praise for Muti.

The highlights of the Haitink cycle are the early symphonies  (1-3) IMO.

Agreed. Muti seems square and dispassionate (despite his reputation). I am a big fan of Jurowski/LPO and was present at the live recording of 5, which is spectacular, thrilling, and darn near perfect until the artificially prolonged last four chords. His Winter Daydreams are my reference.

For a different opinion, I find the early symphonies with Markevitch OK, but not the later ones. And I'm not particularly fond of Muti's either, though the Manfred is OK. Some favourites are Mravinsky stereo in 4-5-6, Svetlanov's Manfred, Previn/RCA in no.2, the Rostropovich/EMI set, etc.

For me a rare binge at the Chandos Summer Sale - single discs @ £5.00 and doubles £8.50 or £10.  P&P in the UK very reasonable as well.  I think this runs until the end of September.....

The Rozsa is very good and the Bax I think.
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL!

Great choices RS! I have everything there apart from the Delius, Parry and Elgar discs (although if one is Symphony 3 I do have that as well.) I don't have a drinks coaster with a picture of a dog in what looks like a Star Trek costume either. I especially like the VW Bergen disc and the Clifton Parker film music, especially 'Night of the Demon'. I wish you happy listening.

I find the VW disc very fine. I also heard them do a very fine concert performance (how I long for those days!) of this programme which prompted me to buy that disc. Job is particularly superb IIRC.

Indispensable. Both works are major Carter. I think this is the only game in town for Symphonia. In the concerto I prefer the version on ATMA.

Both are excellent.  It has become almost fashionable from some commentators to denigrate/diminish Neville Marriner's recordings.  In my book you can't beat quality and insight - something he had in spades.  That said - he wouldn't have been the first person I would have thought of to conduct rip-roaring Walton film scores but this disc is especially fine.  At the time hearing the Academy of St. Martins playing full orchestral scores was something of a novelty too....

Thank you for your perspective, RS.
Upon streaming the Walton's, unexpectedly, it was the Wartime Sketchbook that really hit the mark for me.

I cannot get this composer out of my head since Jeffrey posted a CD with a few of his symphonies. I cannot get that CD, so I buy one which I still can get as a CD. So the blame for buying this CD goes to Jeffrey, no doubt about it. :o
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.
