MI, any comments in general on the Slatkin RCA recorded sound? I think I've run into a couple of them where you have to turn the volume up.

I'm pretty sure the remastering fixes this, but this is just an assumption as I don't actually own that box set but the individual releases. But if his remastered RVW or Elgar boxes are anything to go by, I'd say the fidelity should be excellent.

Brian

Thanks! I'll keep watch in the listening thread.

Just bought:

I originally bought this via Amazon and the recording came damaged and had to send it back, so I'm trying my luck again and, hopefully, this one will be in better shape when it arrives! Andre spoke highly of this recording and the reviews seemed quite favorable. I own McCreesh's recording of Britten's War Requiem, which I love, but I imagine this being more up this conductor's alley.

That's a nice set, Listener. I own most of them --- the Copland, Schuman and Piston are especially good.

+1 for that set and +1 for the quality of similar sets' remasterings.  But a shame this set did not include the Barber recordings from that same series - a curious omission that must be down to rights or licencing I assume

The Nino Rota is a winner Jeffrey.

Thanks Harry. I know that Christo liked the Chandos recording but this one was cheaper. I sampled it on you Tube and liked what I heard. I have his piano concertos on Chandos but can't remember much about them and, of course, I have his beautiful soundtrack for Zeffirelli's 'Romeo and Juliet.

An impressive performance, John.

Excellent. Yeah, I recall you had mentioned to me you enjoyed it. I'm in no short supply of Berlioz Requiem recordings, but, hey, what's another one going to hurt? ;)

Bought some more Berlioz:

Interesting choices, Jeffrey. The Rachmaninov contains three masterworks --- Three Russian Songs is hugely underrated. I think in this particular recording, though, I had some issues with the fidelity. I hope it's not an issue for you.

I'm sure that I'll enjoy it John. I love the 'Three Russian Songs'.

I've been slowing down on purchases of late, but these big boxes filled a few interesting gaps, and at the price I couldn't resist...

The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.
