György Kurtág: WORKS (Hungaroton)

Alternative ASIN/page: B000009INW

The best I could manage was a not-terribly-expensive used "like new" copy, but I didn't want to run the risk of simply not getting this on disk.  Earlier works.
That's the disc with The Sayings of Peter Bornemisza, right? An absolutely staggering piece, the individual sections Webernian in scale yet piling up with remorseless intensity over 40 minutes. Perhaps not for everyday listening, but to me one of those never-heard semi-legendary works that emphatically live up to their reputation.

Pity about the short running time, but the second concerto on disc at last is very, very tempting.

Listen What the (Swabian) Cat Dragged In:

L.v. Beethoven
Missa in C op.86
F.Bernius / Chamber Chorus Stuttgart / Court Chapel Stuttgart
Carus

German link - UK link
Took me two listens to get into it... but then!
Includes Cherubini's Sciant getnes.

F. Mendelssohn-B.
Oratorios (Paulus, Elias, Christus)
Bernius / Chamber Chorus Stuttgart
German Chamber Phil. Bremen, Classical Philharmonic Stuttgart
incl.: C.Pregardien, W.Güra, M.Volle...
Carus (4CDs)

German link - UK link

F. Hammerschmidt (1611-1675) + Johann Rosenmüller (1619-1684)
Also hat Gott die Welt geliebt
+ Dixit Dominus
J.Arnold / Gli Scarlattisti
Carus

German link - UK link
German early baroque... in the line of Schuetz & Schein. 9 Motets & JR's Dixit Dominus.
The liner notes somewhat casually call Rosenmüller's vitae a "picaresque novel" -- Rosenmüller was an arrested (I suspect not convicted, but I haven't researched it) pedophile who escaped prison and went into exile in Venice before returning, decades later, to German lands.

Personally, I would have bought the Muti EMI set. I find Muti to be the more inspired conductor in Scriabin's symphonies.

But it's OOP, and costs more than $100...
There are some single discs of that set, but those are expensive, too

Yikes! You're quite right. It's been awhile since I looked at that set and I assumed it was still in-print. Even the Brilliant Classics reissue is OOP? WTF? ??? Anyway, if you can ever find it used in good condition do not hesitate. It's a stunner!

You can't be looking very hard. For roughly $20,- (for the 2001 EMI set) you can get used copies sent to the US; for about $30 you find them on Amazon.com.

No broken tables (from the heavy pounding) here. No Russian orchestral pieces. No instruments you have to sit down to play. No singing. Just some righteous playing from a talented fiddler! :)

Au contraire, Neal, I'll gladly pound the table for that album! I've got an eye on her "Tribute to Maud Powell" too.

24/96 download from eclassical.  This has includes Lt. Kije with a baritone (AFAIK only the 5th recording to use a baritone).  We get Cyrillic and English in the booklet, but no transliteration.

Special of the day from eclassical.

Rosenmüller was a damn good composer. Interesting disc.  ;)

I think that's a first class set of performances (without prejudice to Muti, whose set I haven't heard)

And that Boulez set is very tempting, considering that I have next to nothing of any of those three composers....

The Tcherepnin, Schubert, and Janacek will all be new music for me, and the same for half the Brahms, although truth be told,  that one I'm getting for the sake of the pianist--he's the one who deeply impressed me in Brilliant's set of Schumann's complete piano works (performances by various and sundry pianists)

ETA: to spare you the fuzzy resolution image: the Schubert is a group of duets, trios and quartets for voices and piano,  Gerald Moore being the pianist, and Janet Baker, Elly Ameling,  Horst Laubenthal, and D F-D being the singers.

I own the Ligeti and enjoy it immensely.  The Boulez looks very tempting.  Great haul!

Bought this tonight on iTunes.  A "sampler" of sorts.  Listened through once and was enthralled, about to listen through again right now!

Happy birthday, John! If/when my interest level and funds are sufficient, certainly.

Hm. Didn't check the German Amazon, but it's still twice as expensive as the Ashkenazy set. Lets hope that it will be reissued soon again, by whomever happens to own the recording.

I have nothing else from those composers, and have been looking for especially Webern and Varese for some time, ought to be good recordings, from what I've read and heard.

Thanks! I've relatively recently discovered Ligeti, good stuff, just about all I've heard thus far.

Happy Birthday, John! In honor of you I will not be listening to Delius. :P  ;)
But perhaps some Ives, or Berg instead.  ;D

Thanks, Greg! Speaking of Delius, do you own any of his music in your collection?
