Another Mullova fan, I see!  8)

Actually, no (or at least not yet).  But I've seen enough +ve comments about her that Presto's Onyx sale provided a temptation that was, er, too tempting.  And it is true that her recording of the first Shostakovich concerto is my favorite performance of that work.  Be interesting to see how well she handled the other end of the chronological spectrum.

In all fairness, speaking as someone who has undergone surgery for diverticulitis, all this talk about cutting and Colon and this Wagner.... stuff has really gone far to make me that much less likely to snap up my first Ring....    >:D

Please don't be discouraged.  You will be missing out on a lot if you let anti-Wagnerian sentiments get the better of you.

A bit on the geeky side, admittedly, but one of the first pieces I listened to, when first I snaffled the box, was Gunther Schuller's Seven Studies on Paul Klee.

And speaking of the whole tostada I couldn't help salivating all over your  Bach 2000 USB purchase! Were you able to easily transfer the files into iTunes etc. easily? How are the files organised on the USB? In folders organised by genre??  Say I want a particular work could it be found easily?

I cannot speak to iTunes, Marvin, as I'll have nothing to do with it. I've not tried to do so yet, but I expect a simple drag-&-drop will do the trick.  I fear I neglected Bach while I was on vacation, but I have entirely been enjoying forays into this treasure store.  The folder organization is simple, and I have not had any difficulty navigating it (I also refer frequently to the PDF of the source CD tracklists).

EDIT:  Oops!  I placed a bid on this on E-Bay not really expecting to win it. 0:)  At $13 shipped I can't feel too bad about my mistake, though.

EDIT 2:  And here it is, this month's dun dun DUN....BIG ORDER:

And with this I am mostly done, I think.  Prior to this order I've collected one Handel opera (Aggripina, Gardiner), all of Mozart's mature operas (Jacobs) and several recital discs.  Time to sit back, listen and learn and then explore from there at a later time.  That said, I am still hell-bent on finding some way to pick up that King's Consort box set of Vivaldi's sacred music this month (If anyone in the San Antonio area is looking for bookshelves or a pool table you could consider putting the money toward a good cause... ;)).

Neal should feel bad about encouraging Fiscally Irresponsible Behaviour.

FWIW, of that gaggle of things you ordered, Dude, I know and really like: the Bowman/Handel/Heroic; the Vivaldi ORLANDO FURIOSO; the Giardino box; the Rameau HIPPOLYTE; and that Lorraine Hunt Lieberson disc of Bach Cantatas, which is a pearl.  The other items are ringing bells for me now...I'm going to need to check them out.

I'm now Bached up with music!
I chose Belder and Gulda for my new full WTC performances. Haven't heard much from the Belder, but I have some of his other Bach on Brilliant Classics and they are superb. The Gulda might be the best I've heard of the WTC, I'm finding I prefer less pedal used in these pieces. Although the same cannot be said for Art of Fugue. My obsession for this piece(s) continues to increase. I now have string versions along with keyboard, and perhaps it's because I love how the strings sustain the notes that I'm attracted to MacGregor's performance. She offers contemplative readings that are quite lovely. Plus you get the French Suites all at a nice price. These are Bylsma's first recordings of the Cello Suites, a few days ago I purchased his 1992 recording. They are both highly individual and unique. Sample the opening Prelude and you can instantly hear the difference.

He should - the bastard!   :P

But he's probably just waiting for someone to place a big Bach order. When that happens, I'm sure his behavior will improve!  ;D

Good!  The Giardino box is your damn fault. :P

By the way, that Nuria Rial Handel album can be found on YouTube; the part of it which includes her singing, at least, the filler is left out.  Her Telemann album cannot be found on YouTube, but I can personally say that it is stunning and I've heard good things about this one, which is currently in the mail.  Also, I literally had to pause that Lieberson Handel recital in the middle of the album under a "MUST...BUY...SOMETHING ELSE" impulse and hunt down that Bach album so my brain would let me listen in peace.

I've had the same experience.  Belder has never let me down in Bach.  If he is not always a first choice he tends to make a damn fine second one.  Let me know what you think of that recording of the Brandenburg Concertos, by the way.

Sergeant Rock

Recent discussion here about the Brandenburgs made me hungry for a new set. After listening to clips of recommended (and not recommended) versions, I decided to add Pinnock's to my collection. The Suites were an added incentive. The only other set of PI Suites I own is played by the William Malloch-led Boston Early Music Soloists--which is too manic for my taste. (Malloch calls them, on the cover, Suites for Dancing. But if he valued truth-in-advertising, he would have called them Suites for Slam Dancing.) Arrived yesterday.

Greg, let me know what you think of Belder's WTC. I still don't have a recording of the WTC and since Belder's is on sale for $12 at Presto, that's looking a likely candidate.
