This recording was one of my first period instrument purchases

Mine too.

Today I bought my first symphony by Shostakovich, No. 8 by Haitink.

I recently fell in love with the String Quartets (Emerson), and have already ordered a second set (Fitzwilliam). It's as exciting to me as when I discovered Mahler in 1987. I thought since Shostakovich has so much to offer, maybe I'd try some of the symphonies before completely pigging out on the SQs. I read through a thread about box sets, but decided to try some individual symphonies first. I think I'd like some by Jansons and Barshai next. And Petrenko.

I really like this Shostakovich guy.

That is an excellent recording of the Eighth Symphony, indeed.

Thanks, Karl. It was your recommendation, and that of someone who has a Dmitri avatar, that convinced me.

I inherited all of Haitink's Shostakovich 20 years ago or so, but I wasn't interested and I sold it. All these years later, it speaks to me. I hope I like the symphonies as much as the SQs.

Had some time to kill in town today and ended up hitting a used CD shop and a used book store.  The results are below:

My Verdi superbox from Vivace Classical will sadly be further delayed. Apparently the demand was higher than expected (and their discount too nice).

Amazon at least does not charge until dispatch, unlike Vivace.   >:(

Schoenberg by Boulez (Sony, 11cd)

Amazon US-MP seller i-Deals has been periodically dropping its prices on these Sony sets; this one was $19 including shipping, the lowest I've seen it.  The William Kapell box was the same price for a little while but has risen a bit, lately...I'll be getting that one before long.

I thought I had a great deal when I got those in previous (now going out-of-print) edition.  Superb recordings.  I enjoy Boulez' earlier work on Columbia/Sony much more than the later recordings on DG (with awful, harsh audio).

They need to release more Szell in that series.

Yes, please! And Munch's Berlioz.

My Webern/Boulez/Sony discs are right thrashed, so I am hoping we get a shot at another Sony box with the Webern and Berg stuff all together.

Off the top of anyone's head, how much essential Szell will be missing from that ~49-disc retro box?  Perhaps too early to ask this?  I had a list I'd gotten via grapevine (cannot put my hands on it for the moment, maybe in 'New Releases' thread); that list seemed to omit the Mozart concertos with Casadesus.  I really don't know the rest of the discography.

I haven't seen a list of recordings that are included in that box. If you can find the list and post it, I'd be obliged. I can then tell you what is missing (I have books that include Szell and Cleveland O discographies).

I probably won't get around to this one for a while, but at six dollars and change with shipping I am not too concerned about that.

Second link is a bit flakey, sometimes it doesn't work.  To supplement that big Szell Box this would work

[asin]B004H6P2KQ[/asin]

You get all of Casadesus' concerto recordings, including some with Ormandy instead of Szell.

Anyone see some sign of when the big Szell box might be released in the west?
