A word or two on that Zelenka when you get a chance please. . .

A few members here have recomended/commented on that one. I got it and I enjoy it too. The choral singing is fantastic, and the music is thoroughly engaging.  It is period all the way, with period instruments and a smaller chorus too. Great performance, full of energy. I agree with Brian - pull the trigger already!! :)

Octave: WOW. Not only is that part one of a big haul, but a GREAT haul. Skrowaczewski's marvelous Bruckner, the totally delightful Silvestri Icon box, Bavouzet's Debussy, Zelenka's masterful Missa Votiva (HIPster, I love that disc - excellent small choir, brilliant music), and I haven't heard Rautavaara's choral music but I bet it's fantastic. Wow. Can't wait to dampen your guilt by praising the rest.

+1 on the Votiva, it's an amazing piece, and I can't imagine the recording being bettered. Their other Zelenka recordins, and the Dombrecht & Il Fondamento recording of De Profundis, Miserere, and Requiem, ZWV 48 are all desert island material.
And the rest are mouthwatering..

Nice haul, Octave!
A word or two on that Zelenka when you get a chance please. . .

I would be happy to say something about it, but you might refer to the end of the Zelenka composer thread for a couple brief opinions, maybe a little more earlier in that thread, and I think there were a couple good/knowledgable reviews at Amazon?  (including one by 'Giordano Bruno'?)  FYI on that, as those were my motivas for buying it...
EDIT: oops, well...you heard the tragic chorus here already!  It is cheering to get reinforcement for $$$$ already spent.

You know the Zelenka Trio Sonatas?  Works not to be missed.  I have a recording which is nla, but there are other alternatives.

Very nice haul.  I'd be interested in knowing what the Jurowski DSCH recordings are like.

Thanks, Jeffrey. I've already listened to the Jurowski recording of The Execution of Stephan Razin and it's excellent. Highly recommended. Haven't listened to the one with The Song of the Forests yet as I haven't received it yet.

Thread duty:

Really have been looking forward to this recording. Tabakova is definitely a name to look out for in the future.

Thanks for that recommendation; I know two different recordings of those great pieces, if memory serves...both by Heinz Holliger et al.  (The famous ECM one, and earlier ones in that 5cd Archiv Zelenka box reissued by Brilliant.)  I certainly heard both before thinking about performance practice (beofre I'd even heard of HIP-anything), so a really good HIP/period-instruments recording of those pieces might be of great interest to me.  They're lovely pieces, I need to hear them again soon.  Thanks for mentioning the Claves!

Thanks for saying this, that's encouraging, and I think I've heard a couple others speak highly of the rest that Handel box.
By coincidence, I see that just earlier today a tasty-looking recommendation for some Zelenka trio sonatas was made in the Listening thread; of course, 1.) it's on Accent and 2.) I'm now broke.  Hahaha
Happy to see strong recommendations for the DHM Telemann box, I think it was Gordo who sung its praises weeks ago as well...

You can try this site: http://opera.stanford.edu/iu/libmlist.html, or this one http://archive.org/search.php?query=verdi%20libretto%20AND%20mediatype%3Atexts, or this one http://www.librettidopera.it/ope_alfatit.html. You can also try downloading from Brilliant, Decca, etc. At least, they will have some of the major ones (Decca here, Brilliant here ). You may need to register or something.

PS: This is one is more useful if you speak Spanish: http://www.kareol.es/autor.htm. There is this one too: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/evwool/page4.html

PS2: Check out Chandos as well. They have all the booklets on the site and do a number of ENglish language versions.

PS3: Ok this is the last one (I mean it this time! :)): http://www.operafolio.com/list_of_opera_libretti.asp

I seem to be more interested in hearing different chamber music at this time than I am in going wide with Shostakovich.

I don't know if you have been following my thread on the Durufle Requiem, but this recording is arguably the best version for organ solo.  Janet Baker's Pie Jesu is exquisite.  I hope you enjoy it, both works are very well represented.

Indeed, your thread is the culprit; and I hope you'll keep sharing some reflections on the available recordings.  Thus far, I only have Matthew Best's recording of the "third version" (organ, choir, chamber orch) on Hyperion----I wonder what you think of that one?
I'll eventually be getting Durufle's own recording of the largest-scale version (the Apex issue you praised), just to have one recording of each version.

Thread duty, another batch:

Havergal Brian: SYMPH 1 'GOTHIC' (Ondrej Lenard - Naxos, 2cd)
I join the cult, tentatively...

[asin]B001GDJ9IY[/asin]

[asin]B001TKUB40[/asin]
Purcell: EDITION VOL. 1 - FAIRY QUEEN, DIDO/AENEAS, KING ARTHUR [Christie/Harnoncourt - Warner, 4cd]
Mainly for Christie's KA.  Hopefully the other two (Christie's D&A, Nick's FQ) will be worthy enough.  I don't mind a slight surplus of Vero Gens.

[asin]B002O2MCMG[/asin]
Villa-Lobos: SYMPHONIES (CPO, 7cd)

[asin]B0018OKHJ6[/asin]
Biber: FIDICINIUM SACRO PROFANUM (Zigzag)

Octave, Octave, Octave...you're going to have some reviewing to do when that stuff comes in.

The Skrowaczewski Bruckner; the Rautavaara choral works; the Villa-Lobos symphonies; the Italian Baroque box set; Segerstam's Sibelius; the Froberger....and whatever anyone else might want to hear about. ;)

Octave, the Biber FIDICINIUM and the Purcell DIDO (Currentzis) are a few favorites of mine. Hope you enjoy them!!

Geo - the Savall Brandenburg is a very fine recording!

I look forward to reading your thoughts on it, especially in relation to your praises for Fasolis and I Barocchisti. . .

Octave - the Cafe Zimmermann Bach set is a jewel.  One of the best musical gifts I've ever received!  Enjoy.
