Geo - the Savall Brandenburg is a very fine recording!

I look forward to reading your thoughts on it, especially in relation to your praises for Fasolis and I Barocchisti. . .

I have five recordings lying around if I include the Savall one, so I will likely do some comparative listening when it comes in.  That said, based on the samples it sounds damn near perfect! :)

Excellent choice.  The most rewarding Saygun I've purchased is his 2-cd set of the string quartets.

I've recently obtained the string quartets as well, but ended up starting my exploration with the orchestral music.

I've done quite a bit of purchasing since leaving taking a break from GMG :) -

...

And several more...my arm is tired from copying and pasting. :)

I read the post scrolling up from the bottom, and before reaching the top I thought "MI is back" :)

Octave - the Cafe Zimmermann Bach set is a jewel.  One of the best musical gifts I've ever received!  Enjoy.

Agh, the Savall BRANDENBURGs....I knew I'd forgotten something.    >:(    I've heard that one is great.
I cannot wait to dig into the Zimmermanns.  I heard at least a couple discs, several years ago, and it was quicksilver.  I think Brian and several others here have also liked those.

[asin]B002VFCE7Y[/asin]
Dallapiccola: ORCHESTRAL WORKS VOLS. 1 & 2 [Noseda/BBC et al - Chandos]
Because I enjoyed the disc with "Prisoner's Song" etc on Apex, so much; it's nice that there's little or no overlap of pieces among these three discs.

[asin]B002AG2NKW[/asin]
La Reverdie: HISTORIA SANCTI EADMUNDI (Arcana)

[asin]B002AHJUO8[/asin]
La Reverdie: NOX LUX - FRANCE & ANGLETERRE 1200-1300 (Arcana)

[asin]B001JFKVA4[/asin]
Morton Feldman: FOR CHRISTIAN WOLFF [California E.A.R. Unit - Bridge, 3cd]

[asin]B002XG8LN2[/asin]
Nicolaus Bruhns: DAS KANTATENWERK (Ricercar Consort - Ricercar, 2cd)

[asin]B0001CLZUQ[/asin]
Orlando Gibbons: CONSORTS FOR VIOLS [Phantasm] (Avie)

[asin]B000A3VTRA[/asin]
Robert Schumann: FÜR MEINE CLARA [Valli/Ghielmi + La Gaia Scienza] (Winter & Winter)
Milk recommended the Graf-pedal-pianoforte-two-hands pieces; also, I was so impressed with the LGS HIP Brahms quintets [same label], I had to check this quintet out.  The disc seems to be a bit short by crammed-disc standards, ~45m, but advance samples made that a nonissue for me.

[asin]B0092YHIAA[/asin]
Schumann: COMPLETE SOLO PIANO MUSIC [Eric Le Sage] (Alpha, 13cd)

[asin]B002YOJCE0[/asin]
Schumann: INTRO/ALLEGRO + GEISTERVARIATIONEN etc [Eschenbach/Barto/NDRSO] (Ondine)
For weeping.

[asin]B005FVFWFC[/asin]
Richard Strauss: FOUR LAST SONGS + ORCH SONGS [Schwarzkopf/Szell] (EMI)

[asin]B0072IVGU6[/asin]
Lawes: CONSORTS TO THE ORGAN [Phantasm] (Linn)

[asin]B001BLR7HQ[/asin]
Lawes: HARP CONSORTS [Eilander + Les Voix Humaines] (Atma)

[asin]B00000DC25[/asin]
Handel: KEYBOARD MUSIC - WHEN THEY HAD PEDALS, VOL. 2 [Paul Wolfe] (Lyrichord, 2cd)
The GMG descriptions that led me to this speak of Wolfe's "60s" recordings, but I think this Lyrichord reissue was recorded in 1958.  I hope I didn't get the wrong recordings.

Chopin: PIANO CONCERTOS 1 & 2 [K. Zimerman + Polish Festival Orch]

A 'small' order partly inspired by Octave:

Definitely like to follow the example to get that.

Did you guys found it by any chance anywhere cheap? :) (£30 at Amazon it a bit too steep for me... ::))

I have finally geared myself up and ordered the DVD Rattle version of Bach's St Matthew Passion. The only source for it is the on-line shop of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.

It is a ritualisation rather than a stand and deliver concert. The singers listed are as good as any now singing, but it was the reviews that convinced me, as i am just not a Rattle fan. It is a filmed concert and in the on-line extract the presentation looks a mess, but I assume it is also about entering that amazing Bach journey from the start and experiencing it all rather than an odd looking two minute edited mash-up. So now the wait has started.

The best I could find was via Importcds domestic USA, $36 all-in.  (But that was during their brief 10% sale, which might happen again in November.)

This is a problem and a symptom, though I did a little math and it's not so hopeless: once I chill out on the movies, I can listen (with full attention) to 2-3 discs per day and get through this Brobdingnagian haul in about four months or less.  That's 2-3 discs not used as background at work etc, so if I cheat then I'll get through them all a bit more quickly.  Very few of these are "impulse" buys...I've been hovering over most of them for months or longer.

I pulled a used copy off the Amazon MP myself; $34 with shipping, but that had some scuffing on the front of the booklet so the price was lowered to be competitive.

Speaking of sets that cost a pretty penny, where did you pull that Cafe Zimmerman Bach from?

$42 all-in from Importcds, during that 10% sale.  Not exactly a steal at all, but a small break.

I spaced out on replying to that nice, guilt-assuaging post, Brian; you were one of the big nudges toward that Cafe Zimmermann set.

Great recordings, Octave. Dallapiccola is quite underrated.

I almost bought something from the AMP seller "gurnblanston67" but it turns out to be not GMG's Gurn Blanston. So, no purchases for me today. That's not a bad thing as my unlistened stack is too large.

I saw Steve in Saratoga Springs, NY back in 1979, and he did that bit live, the first time I ever heard it. For reasons unknown, it struck me as just wildly amusing, and I ended up using it as a nom de plume as early as 1981. I still find it amusing, it has just the right absurd, yet flaccid sort of tone that tickles me. :)

You can call me Gurn.... but ya doesn't have to call me Mr. Blanston.   ;)

Re: Zelenka MISSA VOTIVA (Zigzag):
I would be happy to say something about it, but you might refer to the end of the Zelenka composer thread for a couple brief opinions, maybe a little more earlier in that thread, and I think there were a couple good/knowledgable reviews at Amazon?  (including one by 'Giordano Bruno'?)  FYI on that, as those were my motivas for buying it...
EDIT: oops, well...you heard the tragic chorus here already!  It is cheering to get reinforcement for $$$$ already spent.

For anyone interested, there is a video of that entire performance on YouTube.  Talk about quality sampling before you (inevitably) buy!

EDIT:  Thread duty.  Needed a (cheap) book of libretti and decided to mop up a couple of other 'next month's essentials' along the way:
