Mine:

Gold: Rowicki, Kertesz
Silver: Neumann, Suitner
Bronze: Kubelik, Anguélov

Wish Dohnányi/Cleveland had done a complete cycle. The symphonies they did record are outstanding.

Rowicki is growing on me a lot with age. My age, not his. He stopped aging a while back.  :P

I have just received this very nicely presented 2 CD box set. I hope that the music making lives up to the presentation....

Was about to type in my Dvorak symphony opinions (I assume that's what's being discussed, based on the conductors mentioned) and realized that everyone on this thread has read them already, at least twice. I even know what you would reply if I did.

Same here   :). But I have to say it's the 'old' numbered symphonies (currently 5-9) that really count for me. And for all of them I choose a version that's not part of an integral set. IOW such a set is useful to me only when it comes to the occasional hearing of symphonies 1-4.

Free shipping at JPC, so I looked in my basket, and just one in the order queue, O, well, at least a fine one, if only one ;D

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Just bought:

I've been eyeballing both of these recordings for quite some time. I had to give a good bit for the Gibson recording of Nielsen's Inextinguishable, but the recording of the 5th was rather cheap.

I'm still debating on whether I want to buy this Shostakovich symphony set. I already own the Kondrashin performances, but I see that there's several Rozhdestvensky in the set and several other conductors. I'll probably wait this one out awhile. A big thumbs up for The Essential Sibelius BIS set. That set served me well for many years until I gave it to a friend and opted to expand out into the Sibelius Edition sets.

A great haul, Jeffrey! Would be curious to know what Holmboe recordings you bought? I trust that you will provide us with 'pretty pictures' when you have the time. ;)

Kairos, the CDs of the brass concertos and chamber concertos, and the cello concertos.

The Skalkottas was all orchestral stuff.

Bought last night and this morning:

Ormandy's performance of Nielsen's Sinfonia Semplice comes highly recommended by vandermolen (Jeffrey), so I was lucky to have found a copy of this OOP recording.

I recently requested recommendations for Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 and this set came up. I know that there was not universal acclaim for it but I got it quite cheaply. The other reason that I took it was that I have no other versions of the second and third concertos. So I am looking forward to hearing all of the contents.

Good call! The Piano Concerto No.1 as well as the Double Bass Concerto are great favourites of mine. I trust you liked the previous Skalkottas purchases enough, then?  8)

After banging on about it I changed my mind about the Essential Sibelius set and ordered this one instead - I guess I wasn't so keen about all the repertoire in the BIS set.
looking forward to this one muchly! :)

That's interesting. I didn't know about that one. How does it compare with his EMI recording? Any quicker perchance?

I presume you already have his very fine Brahms 4th with BPO.
