This has to be frustrating for the musicians.

The Chinese will start getting the impression that all American orchestras are conducted by Lorin Maazel. The CSO's recent China tour was also conducted by him, when Muti bowed out due to illness.

Add Cleveland, New York and Pittsburgh. Am I missing any?

Any "buzz" on internal disagreements among board members?

That would seem to be a possible reason why no offer has been made to somebody: e.g. somebody or somebodies with influence (= money, perhaps) is/are pushing one way against others equally adamant about another candidate.

A good point.  Whatever is going on I hope that the situation gets resolved quickly.

Hmm....clearly the US needs to send some other conductors over as a show of power! >:D

(Sorry, must have been reading one of my father's Red Scare e-mail forwards again.)

You're right. How many living conductors are left?

I hope they keep their sticky hands off Andris Nelsons.....we are happy with him over here. Can't get to grips with how Harding gets such good gigs. I find his performances cold. Surely Maazel will have to slow down some time soon.

The Colorado Symphony Orchestra (here in Denver) was without a permanent conductor for a year and a half.  Now Andrew Litton has been appointed "conductor" and "artistic advisor"--apparently a very different thing from "music director."  It seems to be a thing of the past for conductors to settle for leading one orchestra and settling down in that orchestra's city; Maestro Litton will still live in New York City. ::)

You must be thinking of the Boston Creme Pie, Mike, but honestly, we wash our hands afterwards, and the fingers aren't so sticky, really.

Well, Daniel will certainly be happy with this news, Mike apparently not so much!

The new BSO conductor is Andris Nelsons.

The San Antonio Symphony fired Larry Rachleff a few years ago because he refused to move there - fair, since he teaches conducting at Rice (in Houston).

When I was in Detroit, Neeme Jarvi was in charge there - and in Gothenburg.

Hallelujah ! The search is over ! Andris Nelsons WILL be the next music director of the B.S.O. !   Let's all wish him the best in this challenging new job .

They had better take good care of him. They are lucky to get hold of him. He really is a phenomena.

*SIGH*! So he won't be a successor for Rattle at the Berlin PO. *SIGHSIGHSIGH*.
Congrats, Boston. Envying Karl.

I would not bet on that, or perhaps he is thinking of the time after next.
