This is my new favorite website.

It drops you onto a random street in Google Street View, and you have to guess where you are.

My high score's currently about 13,600.

North Star

I should know better what kind of desert is in each part of Australia...
And if the only things visible are Starbucks and Mc Donald's, it's not much better than a bunch of bushes.
Probably my favourite website, too, thanks Brian (for getting me to spend more time on the computer...)

Cute, but you quickly realize that the world is not close to uniformly sampled.  Almost everything is either North America, Western Europe or Australia.

True, but I've been stuck on the same dirt road in Botswana twice.

First game, 8,314.

Farthest distance was my choice of Northern California which was actually New Zealand.

Just nailed Okinawa and Queensland. I'm so addicted.

The pic was definitely not from the Shire. How misleading.

I hate you Brian - I'm addicted!

I got one right with a miss of 1.3 kms but then again I had been there. High score 12818

Had a good one just now. Hmm... bright open space, lots of people (tourists?)... <pan>... those look like small Mayan pyramids <pan>...<pan>...(an about face later) !!! I'm standing at the foot of the great pyramid at Chichen Itza. But the names escaped me then, and I got the position wrong by about a couple of hundred kilometers.

Thanks for the link, Brian.

I got a place I had been - the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, Spain - and missed by 0.3 km because I didn't zoom in close enough on the map.

Think I'll play a round over breakfast...

Great game, three rides so far - not enough to be an addict yet, but I could be one. Highest score: 11318 points. Mistook Java for the Philippines, but had the other countries (Australia twice, South-Africa and Mexico) correct. By sheer luck.  :-X

Edit: addiction growing, highest score now 13064 points.  ::)

Totally off-topic, but I have thought it would be nice to have a thread dedicated to pictures of our everyday places. I mean there are so many people from different places here that this wouldn't be less interesting than vacation pictures.  :)

That is already covered here and, to stay with Google, here. :)

Oh, thanks! I didn't recall this thread, but I clearly knew it. At least, I recalled the picture of Mrs. Rock and the iguana.  :)

Anyway, I don't know if it's exactly what I'm thinking. I don't want postal cards, but the real thing: the way to our work, the subway, a traffic jam on the highway, your favorite cafe, a small square near our home and so...  :)

That thread doesn't limit you to picture postcard-like shots. If it's still not you're thing, you could always join Twitter. ;)

A bit of thread duty: It's not fair to throw in an island which barely exists! >:(
