Sean

Hi, I was on the forum for some years a few years back and these days I have nice teaching position in a southern Chinese university.

I'm still the keenest of listeners while my socio-political-aesthetic views have mellowed, if remaining well defined; good to see a few figures from the past still on the forum, as the world dissolves further into its drivel and nothingness.

These days I try to expore less music new to me and concentrate on core repertory interpretation- presently exploring Naxo's acquisitions of Heifetz, Starker, Slatkin and Karajan etc.

My staff companions here range from dull-annoying and dull-harmless to just totally zombiefied dull, so maybe I should find some moderated time for this place...

What happened to arch-crazy M forever?

Good to see that you haven't lost your edge... ;D

He was banned ages ago. You haven't been here for quite a while, eh?

Hey, Sean.
Yeah, it's been forever if you didn't know M was banned. That seemed like a lifetime ago.
Looking through your photos... nice album. Which city is that?

Sean

Hello Greg and Velimir, I think I remember M forever was banned, not sure if I was too- friends come and go but it's hard to lose a good enemy.

I wonder who you were, Velimir...

I'm doing a second year in China and my understanding of the culture deepens, one that resonates with my social ideas, but I guess I'm looking for something else- I seem to be running out of extreme things to do. No ideas for me I suppose?

The city I'm in is Zhuhai, over the boarder from Macau and across the estuary from Hong Kong. It's warm and pleasant if neither tropical nor temperate; China is neither one thing nor the other.

Here's part of the campus.

Talk soon.

Interesting. I have a friend that I really now have to check and see if he is from that area... I coulda swore he said it was just west from Hong Kong, but I might not remember correctly. He and his family run a Chinese Restaurant where my friend works.

I wonder what you mean by "extreme"... Parasailing over a canyon would be the first extreme fun thing to come to mind, but that's extreeeeeeeeeemely dangerous. There were some cool spots in Thailand that you've probably already been to; villages on the water and such.

Or you could just start lucid dreaming. No limits (besides time) there. Jumping out of your body and exploring an alternate version of your bedroom is... something else. :P

or experience the trippiest creation by man: LSD dream emulator. Okay, never mind. You said "extreme," not trippy. Going to bed now...  :P

Sean

Sure thing Greg.

Actually I'm not really into danger for danger's sake- the way to stay alive is to avoid danger, while also doing what you want to do...

I'm not really into narcotics beyond a little alcohol but an altered state of consciousness where that tension from society is eliminated a bit is often a good thing I guess.

Think I'll get some sleep too- just had some sort of typhoon blow over here and changing pressures don't do the aging physiology too much good.

Hope you're doing okay by the way.

And can I have posts appearing at the top of topics instead of at the bottom...?

Welcome and enjoy (again)!
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

Haven't been to Zhuhai for about two years but as I go to about 50 cities a year in China, I just may stop by there sometime. Not my favorite city since it has little culture and no significant characteristics. The natural environ is nice and the weather pleasant when there is no Typhoon.

Enjoy. But do visit some more interesting places in China, which means, just about anywhere else.

I used to go by "Spitvalve". I think we argued about tonality and the usual "Sean's definition of art music" stuff.

mc ukrneal, okay, thanks. It's a nice enough university and I'm pleased to be out here but the other foreign staff aren't really doing it for me so I might find some time for GMG, despite some rather busy preparation work I'm glibly given...

I'm also making good use of Naxos online but no one to enthuse with here of course- I've recently been having a long Heifetz-fest.

Hi springrite, it wouldn't be my view that many Chinese cities have much culture or characteristics, the whole place having been developed under uniform socialist policies with very similar urban environments and indeed local cultures- from north to south. Why don't you call over at mine some time though?

Hello Karl, it's my lot in life to view the in-crowd with dismay from the sidelines- and be a conceited b******.

Velimir, how's the horn playing?

Can't imagine a more inviting invitation. I pity the students who in order to learn English has to put up with someone who has no understand and wants none but is a know-it-all and constantly insults the native culture which is certainly one of the greatest cultures in world civilization.

Thanks but no thanks.

Hi springrite, I think I can see we have a different view there, but the longer I live in China the more I do understand it and like it.

It's a place perhaps easy to get irritated with at first but tone of life here in some ways is a good antidote to the excesses of Western values of individuality and majority mob rule democracy: I'll post more on this in days to come...

Sean

Hi. I'll try and talk sense...
