Too bad the Swedes beat Finland in Womens' Ice Hockey

Silver for Finland in women's 4×5 km relay, with Norway left without a medal. :)

Almost gold for Finland there, but Charlotte Kalla was amazing!

USA beats Russia 3-2 in a shootout. That was the most exciting shootout I've ever seen, with TJ Oshie scoring 4 times, including the winner. If the NHL were to do that, I'd actually like the shootout! Still, I'd rather not see this in the gold medal game.

in a shootout!  Great game, Quick lived up to his name, great defense by both sides. :)

Almost gold for Netherlands .... but Poland's Zbigniew Brodka was 0,003 faster than Koen Verweij on the 1500 meters speedskating.
Insane.

First Polish gold in Olympic speedskating!

Yes, shootouts are like kissing through a screened window, but ties are the absolute worst, so we take it. Oshie kicked butt!  :)

Good for them! You guys are killing it this time (congrats!), but nice to see the Poles slip in for one too. :)

Of course.
But I feel sad for Verweij. He's a funny character, but right now he's completely destroyed.

A decade or so ago it would have been a dead heat for gold, like the women's downhill this year.

But now in speedskating, the thousandths of seconds are also counted.

They just replayed that race in our time zone. What a last leg by the Swedish woman to take the gold! Her lungs must have been exploding!! :o

I haven't looked at the brackets closely enough to see if it can be Canada/USA for the gold, but that would be a game! You guys are also playing very well.

This is one of the better hockey tournaments I've seen. Many well matched teams. I wish my available time (and my wife) allowed me to see more of it!  :D

I think it's very much possibly that the gold game is Canada/USA (although I hope that's the bronze game  8) )
Here are the brackets

Agreed, great hockey, a pity that Slovakia and Czechs have been pretty weak, but it's very nice to see Switzerland & al. doing better and better.

Quickie can have his off days now and then but he is a big game performer for sure. But I think a big thumbs up has to go to coach Dan Bylsma (I do remember him playing for the KINGS as a checking line specialist) for picking Oshie to take all the final shots. Four out of six is great percentage for shootout.
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

It's baffling that the Swedes has been second rate, are missing their original captain Zetterberg, have been outplayed in all of their games to differing extents, yet are still perfect and have clinched their group. I think they'll get a rude awakening in the elimination rounds. I don't think they can flip a switch that quickly. Their bright spot has been Erik Karlsson, who leads all skaters in points, amazingly.

I'm interested to see if Ryan Miller has still got his 2010 mojo (aside from the golden goal, which was rather weak) in the Slovenia game. I'll try and awake to see the last of it (doesn't help that it starts at 4:30 am my time).

Finland - Canada 1-2 (OT)
Good game from both. Having 8 Canadians on the ice might have helped with that rather flimsy Finnish penalty after which Canada scored...

If you are talking about the clear interference penalty on Crosby in the first period as being 'rather flimsy'?  :)

Well, if it was a 'rather flimsy' call, then how about these:

*Nash never touched the puck, only the mesh on the top of the net.  That was a good goal that should have counted.

*The hit from behind in OT by Finland on Jamie Benn of Canada.  That was a major penalty.

*The clutching and grabbing the Fins were getting away with all day on Canadian forwards in Finland's own end, which is where most of the game was played.

It wouldn't be so bad if the referees had given penalties for similar playing in similar situations outside of this particular case.

Very possibly, but did Benn grab Kukkonen's stick?

It's going to be pretty hard to say that he never touched the puck.

Oh come on, so were the Canadians, and everyone else in the Olympics.

This was a pretty obvious slashing penalty, for example:
