Apparently, he had been severely depressed for the past few months and had been on some medication. The cause of death may have been an accidental overdose, but I continue to read it's a suicide.

YEP - very sad indeed; such a talented and funny guy - below is just one quote - probably 'hung' himself would be my guess, but I'm sure the truth will appear soon enough.  Dave

QuoteThe actor-comedian and Chicago native Robin Williams was found dead at his home Monday morning in an apparent suicide by asphyxiation, Marin County Sheriff's officials said.

Okay, that clears things up a bit, Dave. Such a shame, but I always got the feeling from him that he wasn't emotionally stable even when he was being serious. A brilliant actor and comedian for sure.

I wrote a thing about what he meant to me. Very sad day.

One of my dreams was to some day get to write a movie role for him.

For me, a household name and appearance since my youth: Mork & Mindy (he was Mork and I was Marc ;)), and then the movies (Garp, Good Morning Vietnam, Dead Poet's Society, et cetera) and the shows and now he's dead :( .... rest in peace.

Brian, this is just magnificent.  Thank you so much for saying what is in my heart right now.  You've absolutely nailed it;  you can see the pain on the face and in the performances.  If you don't mind, I've cut and pasted your obituary and sent it to friends.

A thousand thanks for this!!

Very sad news indeed. He was my favorite comedian and he was also a wonderful actor. He even made a film called The Final Cut with my cousin Jim Caviezel. He was a comic genius and he will be truly missed. I hope now that he is at peace and having a great time with his mentor Jonathan Winters.

Hi Brian - thanks for that superb and sincere write-up on Robin Williams - brought back a lot of memories - I remember years ago when he use to appear w/ one of his mentors, Joanathan Winters, another hilarious comedian - Williams will enter that pantheon - for those interested who do not know Winters, there are plenty of videos on the web, such as THIS ONE - Robin will be missed.  Dave :)

I don't know how many times I was told that as a therapist, I remind people of Robin Williams' portrayal in Good Will Hunting. I must admit my style can be similar. So maybe for that reason, the news hit me especially hard, especially as I was doing a reality TV program filming and I met a little boy who is so much like Will Hunting!

I spent the past two hours talking to his parents. Maybe he is the next soul to be saved.

R.I.P., Robin. I know I will miss you. Thank you for showing me vividly what my profession means.
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

People talk of him as a comedian but I have always thought of him as an actor, and one of the best.

Sad that the life of such an icon ends in this way.

Quite a beautiful piece, Brian. Makes me want to give some of his films another chance (and I haven't seen all of them). I was most struck by his brilliance when he was alone onstage.

Thanks again for the obit, which I'm going to forward to some friends who will appreciate it.

I remember when I was 12 and he first appeared as the Mork character on "Happy Days" (in a dream Richie had).  I was just flabbergasted--I'd never seen anything like it. I was deliriously happy when he got his own show...

Later however, although I always liked him in films, I couldn't sit through his interviews or "chats" (on Letterman, say).  He seemed so constitutionally incapable of not "being on", like he was afraid to let down the mask for even a moment.  It just made me cringe.  It was never surprising to hear about his struggles with coke, alcohol, etc.  It's terrible that he never found his way through it all.
     RIP Mr. Williams
It's all good...

"Red sand between my toes/Summer vacation in outer space." - that was a Martian haiku. I must have listened to that comedy album dozens of times as a kid. It really meant something to me as a child. That and Martin's Lets Get Small.
Yeah...it's so very sad.
Gosh...you can be successful and rich and even be surrounded by people that love you and still feel hopelessly depressed.

Depression is a disease.

You can also be loved, rich and successful and have cancer.

Williams had such a wonderful ability to become whatever role he aspired to be. His work on Good Will Hunting, One Hour Photo, and Insomnia are downright scary in terms of realism. He will be missed.

Yes. I know something about it, unfortunately. The medical model oversimplifies and may even be harmful, depending on who you talk to. Certainly it's an illness. But I'm sure you were not meaning to "correct" me.
