Quote from: Peter Power Pop on December 11, 2014, 06:04:58 PMJudging by the image on the cover, I fully expect to hear Danse macabre on the album.

Good guess!!!   :D

These were the "spooky" selections:

Yep. And Night on Bald Mountain had to be there too. Those two always appear on "spooky classical music" albums.

Actually, I like that black space - it's rather striking. The white space of the music stand is what I find intrusive - a little bit would have been good for sake of balance, but surely not that much.

I agree about the white space being intrusive. I'd like the photo a whole lot more if the white thing wasn't there.

If the DG graphics people wanted to balance things up in the black/white department, I reckon they could have extended the white part to the right edge of the image – like so:

But then it'd remind me of "Kilroy was here".

I found this one a bit odd for classical music....

For this 6-CD set, the CDs are subtitled and have explanations:

CD 1 & 2 ‐ Voices in the Dark
To be feared or followed? Do they lead to tears and anger or promise everlasting peace?

CD 3 & 4 ‐ Immortal Romance
Pictures of insatiable desire: Creatures from other worlds, a demon mourning his mortal lover, the full moon his only true companion...

CD 5 & 6 ‐ Danse macabre
An invitation to a grotesque dance: join in the danse macabre and the Witches' Sabbath. Intoxicatingly macabre!

(Information from Presto Classical)

It looks like the people who made that album are trying to appeal to the Twilight crowd.

Update: Each of those 2-CD sections have their own covers.

How about this for worst Hyperion cover?

And the more you look at it, the worse it gets.

Wow, did Virginia Postrel write that twaddle? "Why parody that scene?" Oy veh.

It took me a while to figure out who Virginia Postrel is: she's the lady who wrote that blog post ("A Marketing Mystery").

I must admit I didn't read what Virginia wrote. I was too bothered by the image to get to the words next to it.

I am seriously ticked off that they didn't include Ravel's La Valse for the 3rd section. But, I am happy to see that they included the scherzo of Mahler's 7th.
Beethoven's Op. 133 -- A fugue so bad that even Beethoven himself called it "Grosse".

Yeah, the lack of La Valse is weird. That'd be ideal for the third section (CDs 5 & 6: "Danse macabre"). "An invitation to a grotesque dance" it says. That's La Valse in a nutshell.

Actually, I thought a piece suitable for the album would have been André Caplet's Conte Fantastique (The Masque of the Red Death), but I guess that's in the "not popular enough" category.

As requested by a fellow forum member...

Now this picture needs Ligeti (reminds me of Kubrick's 2001).

The second thing I thought of when looking at this image was: "What's with all that black space? Why not have the text there, in white?"

But the first thing I thought was: "Up, up and away!"

(I discovered the cover thanks to a post by Discobolus. Thanks, Disco baby!)

D'oh! I just figured what the white thing on the cover is. It's sheet music on a stand.

Let me see if I can find a suitable photo of György...

Found one.

I'm proud to say that I knew what that was instantly.

Excellent.

At first, I thought it was something like a big block of marble, and wondered why anyone would put it there in the front of the photographer.

I like the idea of Giant György™ emerging forth from the Moon, fully formed.*

(*And that sentence had way too many "f"s in it. "forth from the Moon, fully formed"? Really?)
